Even MORE Directors Looking to Helm 'Wolf Man'

Over the course of the past few days the web has been bombarded with rumors of who might replace Mark Romanek in the director's chair for Universal's remake of The Wolf Man. After AICN spilled their heart out over the rumored hiring of Brett Ratner, THR today broke the news that the studio is talking to multiple directors leaving the chair still open (thank God). Read on to see who else could end up filling the gap.

Universal is wasting no time in its search for a director for "The Wolf Man" following Mark Romanek's exit from the period horror movie.

Brett Ratner, Frank Darabont, James Mangold and Joe Johnston have either met with the studio and producers or are expected to do so in the coming days.

Bill Condon also is a helmer the studio is keen on.

The biggest challenge the studio faces is its inability to work on the script because of the writers strike. Any filmmaker coming on board takes on a locked script, overseen by Romanek over several years, and many directors want to put their stamp on it. Martin Campbell is one helmer who was interested, but he is no longer in contention.

Another potential wrinkle is star Benicio Del Toro. The actor, known to be choosy with parts and directors, might have a say in the process.

Many on the list are writer-directors, but Ratner is not. The director, who met with the studio Wednesday, is emerging as the strongest contender because of the fact that he has experience in taking over a project that has lost a director late in the game. Ratner famously took over "X-Men: The Last Stand" after Bryan Singer flew the coop to direct "Superman Returns."

The studio is expected to find its man next week for the film, which has a dedicated March start date.

Omg just give Mark Romanek what he wants!!!!! I hate to say this but if he aint on board I hope they just decide to put this one back on the shelves until one of those idiots from universal decide to give Mr. Romanek what he wants in order to make the movie! In my opinion cancel the whole damn thing because all your going to see is another Stephen Sommers film in my opinion. I was really looking forward to see this film what a pity.. Another one that could have been a classic gone bad.

Any of those guys will do, but not Brett Ratner. For fucks sake, he did the Rush Hour movies... does that say WOLFMAN potential?

Why does everyone think Mark Romanek is so great he's directed two films and a bunch of bad music videos. One Hour Photo was good but not great. Frank Darabont and James Mangold are ten times better directors. But I would like to see Frank Darabout director it. But Mangold would fine to. Brett Ratner is so bad please don't director this please.

Hey, Ratner also did "Red Dragon" and that was good actually, do denying he has SOME talent isn't right, cause he does know his shit. He just prefers movies that people usually don't give a shit about.

Denying he has SOME talent isn't wrong if you think that Red Dragon was a soulless, boring movie that doesn't deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as Manhunter... Either way, I like Romanek's visuals, but he needs MORE than $100M to make a character-based horror movie? That sounds ridiculous to me.

hey Kabukiman i agree with you it is very ridiculous that he somehow can't work with 100 million dollars, when everything else he did was lower than like 80 million. The thing is I think Romanek had alot of cool shit up his sleeve for this movie and i had alot of faith that this film was going to be a classic but then again you can't give up on the movie, the damn thing hasn't even been shot yet. the only thing is people are always going to wonder what this movie would have been like with romanek behind the camera.. including me
