DreamWorks to Remake 'Paranormal Activity'

Last week the Slamdance Film Festival came and went leaving behind a number of great films, one of them being Oren Peli's Paranormal Activity (review). The film follows a couple who move into a new house, which turns out to be haunted. It was shot "Blair Witch" style, which has become a new trend in todays filmmaking. Today it was announced that DreamWorks acquired the film with the rights to remake. Read on for the skinny.

When Oren Peli made his supernatural thriller "Paranormal Activity," the first-time filmmaker had no money, no time and a crew of three. Next time around, the video game designer will have a lot more resources at his disposal: DreamWorks intends to remake the movie, with Peli back in the director's chair, according to the LA Times.

The studio made the deal following "Paranormal Activity's" screenings at the Slamdance Film Festival in Utah. Another company, IM Global, will broker the release of Peli's original film overseas.

"It's the best of both worlds," said Jason Blum, who shepherded the film through Slamdance and will produce the remake. "We get to see how the original will do and we get to remake it ourselves."

Peli's low-budget original movie will be released on DVD along with the remake, after the remake is released theatrically. There is no planned schedule for the remake's production, and no new script yet.

"It's definitely very exciting -- I am still digesting it," Peli said Wednesday. "Now we can try to do some things that were not possible before."

So, still no word on when we'll see the original, aside from the DVD release? That sucks. The trailer gave me goosebumps, I was really looking forward to it.

This doesn't sound like a good idea, i was really looking forward to seeing the movie but once it's redone with all that hollywood gloss, i'm not so sure.

It's nice to see the director is selling-out already before his first movie even hits the theaters. And to think that the millions of people who were let down by The Blair Witch Project were finally going to see something actually scary. Dreamworks should just be smart and release the original movie.

My last comments were pretty negative. But this movie has gotten excellent reviews across the board and I am psyched to see it. I'm not pissed at the director for taking a good deal he was offered. but I am pissed at Dreamworks for making an attempt at changing what already worked so well. As long as we still can get the original on DVD I'll be fine. But until that DVD comes out Dreamworks can eat a big load of splouge. Fuckers!

I've been looking forward to see Paranormal Activity for so long. Just release it first! I want to see it so bad.

I don't understand why they would remake it. Think about it, foreign horror is often remade but that's because the distributors assume that audiences don't want to read subtitles. But this is an American film. And the best thing is for a little known low-budget indie picture to debut and hit it big and rake the big bucks (hello, Blair Witch and Halloween). So why would they have the original, scrap it, just to make a "remake" with the same director? Won't that just be the same thing? Lmao. I smell hoax. Because the thing does make absolutely zero sense.
