Platinum Dunes Brings Freddy Krueger Back to Life!

A lot of people bitch and moan that we don't give our sources when we receive top secret Intel, but why would we want to get our scoopers fired? Seriously? We broke the news last month that New Line was working on another Freddy Krueger movie and once again we informed you correctly. Read on to see what the plan is for Platinum Dunes' A Nightmare on Elm Street and watch for more soon.

Platinum Dunes partners Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form have been set by New Line to re-launch Freddy Krueger, the iconic psycho who haunts the subconscious dreams of teenagers and kills them in their sleep.

The trio will create a new franchise based on "A Nightmare on Elm Street," the 1984 Wes Craven film.

Originally played by Robert Englund, Krueger haunted nine films and two TV series, and was New Line's most lucrative franchise until "The Lord of the Rings."

The deal comes as Bay, Fuller and Form ready for an April start for "Friday the 13th," a New Line re-launch of another iconic baddie, Jason Voorhees. Marcus Nispel will direct a script by Damian Shannon and Mark Swift ("Freddy Vs. Jason").

Both franchises will be given a complete overhaul, something that Platinum Dunes provided in the Nispel-directed "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre." New Line won't hire a writer on "Nightmare" until the writer's strike ends.

Platinum Dunes is busy. At Rogue Pictures, the producers are prepping an untitled David Goyer-directed exorcism thriller which has "Cloverfield" star Odette Yustman set to star, and a "Near Dark" remake that will be directed by Samuel Bayer. Bay, Fuller and Form are also developing a Universal remake of Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds," with Martin Campbell directing Naomi Watts.

Not sure what the hell this means exactly. If it were the prequel, it wouldn't re-boot the franchise would it? Can't wait to find out.

If they just do a Nightmare story like it's sounding they're doing with the new Friday where it's not a remake but a story from further in continuity then I'd be okay. If they remake it and Robert Englund isn't involved then I call shenanigans.

MrDisgusting

I think Variety f-cked up in the story, unless it is a prequel

MrDisgusting
5:04pm, January 29, 2008

Ok, Variety f-cked up per usual... Odette Yustman is in BORN, not Friday the 13th and the film isnt called Nightmare BEFORE. Morons

Everyone here bitches and whines about everything. Waa waa waa rob zombie :( Waa waa waa remake :( Waa waa waa... ignore those fucking children and just keep on bring us the news bro! Now, relating to the story, I'm a little worried about the part that says "Originally played by Robert Englund". Now that was probably stated to remind those who forgot or inform those who never knew. But if they do go through with this, he needs to be back. He IS Freddy.

MrDisgusting
5:17pm, January 29, 2008

I wouldnt mind seeing another Freddy, so long as it keeps the essence of Englund's look

EvilSpock
5:32pm, January 29, 2008

Englund is looking creepier than ever - besides mr. englund would be crushed if somebody else got the role... It would be dope if they let somebody like Takashi Miike film it... but whatever - ooh, let Rob Zombie direct it! - right Zombie Hell? Cause he's awesome! heheh.

Fwanger
5:36pm, January 29, 2008

I agree with Zombie Hell. The only part I'm concerned with is "originally played by Robert Englund." There is NO OTHER Freddy but Englund.

biledemon3
6:07pm, January 29, 2008

what about this "Marcus Nispel will direct a script by by Damian Shannon and Mark Swift ("Freddy Vs. Jason"). Freddy vs. Jason was a bad film. It was very far from either of the films story lines. I just hope that they do not fuck up this film.. Hollywood needs some new faces in there to bring some new life to these films not the same old people screwing up more and more films.. And as for rob zombie...BLAH! Long live freddy

predator_king666
6:08pm, January 29, 2008

Hmm, I do want more Freddy, but what ever the hell this means? Prequel would be nice but sequel would be even better, remake? nooo,no remake of the freddy movie, but it will eventually happen.

Nick402

"based on A Nightmare on Elm Street," in other words an exact copy of A Nightmare on Elm Street.

Yea another crappy remake in the making, with Michael Bay's Platinum its what you'll get.....WHAT HAPPPEND TO ORIGINALITY AND CREATIVITY??.

6:51pm, January 29, 2008

Looks like I can finally agree with someone (ZombieHell). BD is full of whiny weiner kids and I'm sick of it. If this new Nightmare doesn't involve Englund though, I don't think you'll see me in the theatres. Jason, Meyers, can all be changed because they have the same look and neither really speak, but Freddy is Englund. There can be no other. I say sign Robert Englund before he dies in some freak accident or of natural causes. Otherwise let there never be another Nightmare.

6:53pm, January 29, 2008

freddy krueger is not replacable, robert englund IS krueger. thats all there is too it. im fine with more movies, sequels, prequels whatever, but it has to have englund

I don't bitch and whine about your sources...but jesus christ in every news story you have to talk about how great you are or BD is..WE broke this ..we are awesome...it's just lame reporting and annoying..and mentioning people whine about this or that just looks like childishly giving in to internet argument or something..shows what sort of contributors work here..I'm done checking out BD that's for sure:http://www.deadlantern.com/2008/01/26/bloody-disgustin gwrong-again/

Ghost_of_Lugosi
7:37pm, January 29, 2008

I'm not against remakes, but it really is annoying when every horror release is one. Can't Platnum Dunes do something semi original? Though I'd rather have a remake than prequel. I don't see the point in a prequel. I'd rather a sequel, but hey if it's being remade so be it the original will always be there to be viewed. No biggie

Looks like Englund is getting replaced.

jasonlives1986
8:11pm, January 29, 2008

anyone who would accept a new person playing Freddy, simple isn't a pure Nightmare on Elm st fan. Why are they remaking a movie that has shelf life? I mean, if they went ahead and made another Freddy movie, based on a story that might not actually play as a sequel, but not as a remake, would it not still make the same amount of money? This is horse shit, and England must of been paid a lot of money to endorse the idea of a remake cause I do not. If they remake the movie as a pure remake, then Im not seeing it, esspecially if England isn't in it, this isn't a Hellraiser, or a Romero movie, people know who Freddy is, this movie would be the "new Freddy movie" not the "oh did you hear about this new movie?' cause everyone already know who he is, and this is why Friday the 13th remake is better because there not straight up remaking it, there putting a new story into the same story line, while at the same time playing as a remake. They should of done the same thing for this and the same for Halloween, these people must have no respect to remake movie after movie as artist as it's just not very creative.

Roberco
10:52pm, January 29, 2008

It sucks because when you think of Freddy, Michael, Jason, Leatherface ---- they're all pretty legendary. It's really hard to invent, so they all choose to "reinvent", maybe one day we'll get another classic... we'll see

ultrazilla2000
11:28pm, January 29, 2008

I'm sure this won't be a staight up remake. Chances are, it will feature a fleshed out back story...something most fans always wanted, with him becoming the supernatural Freddy during the last third of the film or so. I could certainly live with that...as long as it's still Englund!

BloodFlow

Rickykondracki
12:02am, January 30, 2008

Who knows what this movie will be. First it was a Freddy vs. jason 2. Then it was a prequel and then it's a remake and then back to a prequel and then a sequel and now it's back to a remake. They better get their story straight. As for me I won't see it if Robert Englund isn't it. Englund is Freddy and thats all I have to say about that.

Who would see this movie without Robert Englund as Freddy? Not that many I bet.

prey4pablo
5:06am, January 30, 2008

Anything that Michael Bay touches is gonna be pure horse sh?t! Don't even get your hopes up. I will not, & I repeat will not go see a new Elm St. movie if Wes Craven & Robert Englund is not a MAJOR part of it. Leave it to Bay to try and ruin a classic. What does that douche bag know about horror? ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGHH!

appleOFdiscord
7:09am, January 30, 2008

why would Englund not be a part of it anyways? That's the single best role of his life and he keeps talking about Freddy Krueger so why would he not take the part or why would New Line not give it to him? It's not like age would play a difference at all, he is wearing a crap load of make up and prosthetics plus he was awesome in FvsJ

horrorchick81
7:19am, January 30, 2008

this better not be no dam remake......and ROBERT ENGLUND beter be playing freddy.....NOOONE can play freddy as good as him....he created freddy he is freddy! its like replacing tony todd as candyman......i wouldnt see this if craven and englund wasnt apart of it i wouldnt even add it to my collection.....dam hollywood cant they think of any better storylines than remaking freaking CLASSIC movies?!?!?!?!?!

blondy27
10:21am, January 30, 2008

First of all, they just need to leave Nightmare on Elm Street alone because all these producers are gonna do is butcher what is only known as a classic horror movie. Second of all, if they insist on doing this "remake" then they NEED to have Robert Englund as Freddy because if they don't, it'll be crap.

DarkVengeance
10:34am, January 30, 2008

As long as Englund is a part of this im psyched for it!!

blondy27
10:36am, January 30, 2008

Oh and the only reason Freddy looks the way he does is because of the fact that it's Robert Englund under those 5 inches of makeup so can you imagine what this new Freddy will look like if someone else is playing him...OH God, it won't even look like his character anymore...Boooo, this sucks.

1:47pm, January 30, 2008

It better not be a fucking re-make. If it is...well, I won't see it like I haven't seen any of the other re-makes...so I guess it doesn't really matter...but give me something I can see for gods sake...

thephantomk
2:29pm, January 30, 2008

You All say you won't see it, but you will. Time and Time again has proven that remakes made off of big original horror films make money. You will see this no matter what just as you would see Jaws and Halloween and Friday the 13th. So sad, you say you wont but we know better.... Horror in general is losing my respect. The biz that is.

LadyHoRRor
2:57pm, January 30, 2008

This is total garbage the original nightmare was perfect. Please leave it alone. Is nothing sacred anymore. All these new remakes with with the same tween actresses and Pg-13 ratings. I'm not saying all remakes are bad (Texas Chainsaw was actually good, no tweens). For god's sake be creative and make maybe a prequel to Nightmare or something, not a remake. Seeing these amazing original films like Nightmare being remade and toned down for a younger less discriminating audience makes me wanna cry

Rickykondracki
4:47pm, January 30, 2008

Some remakes are actually really good like The Hills Have Eyes and some suck really bad like The Fog. People will see what they want to see. Every good horror movie from the 70's and 80's with a following will get remade. I don't care cause the originals are usually better. In 20 years do you think people will really be talking about how great Rob Zombie's Halloween is? No, they'll be talking about the original.

Queen_of_the_damned
5:46pm, January 30, 2008

I am scared at how this might turn out. Why can't anybody be original anymore? Why not make it a prequel showing the killings that he did before being burned alive. That would be different and fresh.

Evil_Flip
6:17pm, January 30, 2008

If this remaking goes on I'll have to explain my future children what originality means

DAMIEN ZYGOTE
10:52pm, January 30, 2008

I saw this coming a long time ago as with other recent remakes and continue to predict future productions with some kind of 7th sense. That aside, It's my opinion that this remake of A Nighmare On Elm Street should focus more on The Springwood Slasher aspect and Freddy Krueger as a child murderer. I'd like to see a more disturbing and shocking film that deals with the terror of the little children in Springwood and then later with the teenagers in the film. I'd like a peek into the mind of Krueger as a Serial Killer and what makes him tick. A stylized horror flick with fetish overtones and a darker more serious Krueger. As with Rob Zombie's remake of HALLOWEEN, it would be nice to take things to the next level of making the character more extreme and watch the MMPA shit themselves. Watch the character develop as a maniac and then become the legend we all know. As far as who plays the role of Freddy Krueger. I understand where people are coming from when they say that Robert Englund is the Original Freddy. Like other great screen monsters and characters, the time does come to give someone else the chance to reinvent the role. I'm sure people argued the first time anyone suggested that someone other than Boris Karloff play the role of Frankenstein in a film. If someone else does play this character... they better do an amazing job. DZ

It cannot be done with any success. The consensus will be negative no matter what, because iconic horror will always be too near and dear to us to be F'd with without an uproar. That's what makes the films icons...they were done properly the first time. Any second attempt will please very few.

I was six years old when Robert Englund slashed his way into my heart as my personal fave killer Freddy and although I can appreciate that yes Robert is becoming older and will eventually die they should wait until the "original Freddy" has entered his last dream and offed his last annoying, *sob* why are you doing this*sob* teenager Englund basically created the characted let him decide when he wants to pass the torch

I'm pretty excited for this new franchise!!! I hope they make Freddy scary again because he was scary in the first one and I think the 2nd one, but then after that he started cursing and saying funny stuff and they made him a comedian so i hope this time around they stay FAR AWAY from that stuff and just make him scary again

Why doesnt hollywood listen to the fans. We dont want a remake people we want a prequil or a sequil with the original actor if theres no Robert Englund I say we boycot all of the movies made by the company if enough people dont go to the movies they lose money and start listening to the fans! Im not one for this kind of thing but nightmare on elm street was the first movie I ever watched as a baby and I wont let that movie be ruined by some crappy director. I say BD finds a way to show these comments to the them so they can see what we the fans want whos with me!

Somehow I doubt we will see Englund as Freddy in this movie, but I forsee a cameo to "try" and please us happening for sure. Englund is Freddy there is no ifs, ors, or buts about it. But you know.. I'll take what I can get. 1. 2. He's coming for you... hehehe

Wow man - what a bum out. There is nothing good that can possibly come of this. Even if they give back story, it'll blow. One good thing about the original was the 'less is more' factor. You saw what happened when Zombie tried to elaborate on Myers' childhood. This kind of shit should be left to our imagination and movies like Nightmare should left alone for the history books....and don't even get me started on the Hitchcock remake - BLASPHEMY!

well i would welcome a sequal but a remake takes the piss a little especially if robert englund dont play freddy that would be an insult to him and the fans of the movie he is freddy no ifs buts or maybies and the other thing zombies remake/preqaul of halloween wasnt that bad ive seen worse remakes

JMRain99

I am all about a new Freddy movie; a remake even. I enjoy Robert Englund as Freddy but would gladly accept a new Freddy for the longevity of the Nightmare series. I just hope Bay doesn't do a horrible job...Michael Bay is what makes me nervous.

jrod1019
7:05am, February 12, 2008

If the main man himself Robert Englund is not in it than will all know that the new film will indeed tank. So don't even bother wasting your money on that horseshit Bay may feed you. Download that shit if you curious but don't waste your money. Hollywood does not own your wallet if they want your money they might want to care to listen to the fans. Sorry Bay Transformers was great but you didn't do it alone.

Man listen to u lot, films get remade, get over it!! As long as they stick to the rules of freddy and no dream bullshit where you have magic powers or my baby is bringing freddy back i dont care ! i love the first one, one of my fav films, but i say bring it on , if its shit and without robert as freddy , hey guess what? we can always go back to the orig one. i hope robert DOES play freddy, he IS freddy but if he dosent, dont can this film straight away, UNLESS P W.S Anderson is involed !!!!!!

Well, I liked the Halloween remake by Zombie and actually prefer it to the original. Haven't seen the TCM remake yet, so I can't comment on the guy who did it. But, seriously... NOES doesn't work without Englund. The man IS the character, and anyone else attempting to play Freddy will do a piss-poor job in comparison to Englund's performances. A prequel would be okay, yet another sequel... fine, I won't say anything against it, but a remake? Why? The movie is still awesome. And without Englund = not going to see it and boycotting it to the best of my abilities.

Nightmare on Elm Street and Michael Bay - those two go together like drinking and driving, like Bush and the Middle East, like raunchy porn and quality time with your grandparents - it's a match made in heaven. If they could only get Andy Dick to play Freddy it would be perfect. I don't mean to be so mean but c'mon. You they fuck do they think they are kidding with this remake. The orininal had one thing on it's mind and that was to creep people out and wasn't concerned about playing to one demographic or another - the filmmakers can't really blame us for thinking this remake MAY just be a shameless attempt to cash in on some easy money by trying to get Freddy to shoot his load one more time. If it's cool when it comes out I will send them an engraved apology. Until then they can all eat my ass.
