A lot of people bitch and moan that we don't give our sources when we receive top secret Intel, but why would we want to get our scoopers fired? Seriously? We broke the news last month that New Line was working on another Freddy Krueger movie and once again we informed you correctly. Read on to see what the plan is for Platinum Dunes' A Nightmare on Elm Street and watch for more soon.

Platinum Dunes partners Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form have been set by New Line to re-launch Freddy Krueger, the iconic psycho who haunts the subconscious dreams of teenagers and kills them in their sleep.

The trio will create a new franchise based on "A Nightmare on Elm Street," the 1984 Wes Craven film.

Originally played by Robert Englund, Krueger haunted nine films and two TV series, and was New Line's most lucrative franchise until "The Lord of the Rings."

The deal comes as Bay, Fuller and Form ready for an April start for "Friday the 13th," a New Line re-launch of another iconic baddie, Jason Voorhees. Marcus Nispel will direct a script by Damian Shannon and Mark Swift ("Freddy Vs. Jason").

Both franchises will be given a complete overhaul, something that Platinum Dunes provided in the Nispel-directed "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre." New Line won't hire a writer on "Nightmare" until the writer's strike ends.

Platinum Dunes is busy. At Rogue Pictures, the producers are prepping an untitled David Goyer-directed exorcism thriller which has "Cloverfield" star Odette Yustman set to star, and a "Near Dark" remake that will be directed by Samuel Bayer. Bay, Fuller and Form are also developing a Universal remake of Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds," with Martin Campbell directing Naomi Watts.

Not sure what the hell this means exactly. If it were the prequel, it wouldn't re-boot the franchise would it? Can't wait to find out.

If they just do a Nightmare story like it's sounding they're doing with the new Friday where it's not a remake but a story from further in continuity then I'd be okay. If they remake it and Robert Englund isn't involved then I call shenanigans.

I think Variety f-cked up in the story, unless it is a prequel

Ok, Variety f-cked up per usual... Odette Yustman is in BORN, not Friday the 13th and the film isnt called Nightmare BEFORE. Morons

Everyone here bitches and whines about everything. Waa waa waa rob zombie :( Waa waa waa remake :( Waa waa waa... ignore those fucking children and just keep on bring us the news bro! Now, relating to the story, I'm a little worried about the part that says "Originally played by Robert Englund". Now that was probably stated to remind those who forgot or inform those who never knew. But if they do go through with this, he needs to be back. He IS Freddy.

I wouldnt mind seeing another Freddy, so long as it keeps the essence of Englund's look

Englund is looking creepier than ever - besides mr. englund would be crushed if somebody else got the role... It would be dope if they let somebody like Takashi Miike film it... but whatever - ooh, let Rob Zombie direct it! - right Zombie Hell? Cause he's awesome! heheh.

I agree with Zombie Hell. The only part I'm concerned with is "originally played by Robert Englund." There is NO OTHER Freddy but Englund.

what about this "Marcus Nispel will direct a script by by Damian Shannon and Mark Swift ("Freddy Vs. Jason"). Freddy vs. Jason was a bad film. It was very far from either of the films story lines. I just hope that they do not fuck up this film.. Hollywood needs some new faces in there to bring some new life to these films not the same old people screwing up more and more films.. And as for rob zombie...BLAH! Long live freddy

Hmm, I do want more Freddy, but what ever the hell this means? Prequel would be nice but sequel would be even better, remake? nooo,no remake of the freddy movie, but it will eventually happen.

"based on A Nightmare on Elm Street," in other words an exact copy of A Nightmare on Elm Street.

Yea another crappy remake in the making, with Michael Bay's Platinum its what you'll get.....WHAT HAPPPEND TO ORIGINALITY AND CREATIVITY??.

Looks like I can finally agree with someone (ZombieHell). BD is full of whiny weiner kids and I'm sick of it. If this new Nightmare doesn't involve Englund though, I don't think you'll see me in the theatres. Jason, Meyers, can all be changed because they have the same look and neither really speak, but Freddy is Englund. There can be no other. I say sign Robert Englund before he dies in some freak accident or of natural causes. Otherwise let there never be another Nightmare.

I don't bitch and whine about your sources...but jesus christ in every news story you have to talk about how great you are or BD is..WE broke this ..we are awesome...it's just lame reporting and annoying..and mentioning people whine about this or that just looks like childishly giving in to internet argument or something..shows what sort of contributors work here..I'm done checking out BD that's for sure:http://www.deadlantern.com/2008/01/26/bloody-disgustin gwrong-again/

I'm not against remakes, but it really is annoying when every horror release is one. Can't Platnum Dunes do something semi original? Though I'd rather have a remake than prequel. I don't see the point in a prequel. I'd rather a sequel, but hey if it's being remade so be it the original will always be there to be viewed. No biggie

Looks like Englund is getting replaced.

anyone who would accept a new person playing Freddy, simple isn't a pure Nightmare on Elm st fan. Why are they remaking a movie that has shelf life? I mean, if they went ahead and made another Freddy movie, based on a story that might not actually play as a sequel, but not as a remake, would it not still make the same amount of money? This is horse shit, and England must of been paid a lot of money to endorse the idea of a remake cause I do not. If they remake the movie as a pure remake, then Im not seeing it, esspecially if England isn't in it, this isn't a Hellraiser, or a Romero movie, people know who Freddy is, this movie would be the "new Freddy movie" not the "oh did you hear about this new movie?' cause everyone already know who he is, and this is why Friday the 13th remake is better because there not straight up remaking it, there putting a new story into the same story line, while at the same time playing as a remake. They should of done the same thing for this and the same for Halloween, these people must have no respect to remake movie after movie as artist as it's just not very creative.

It sucks because when you think of Freddy, Michael, Jason, Leatherface ---- they're all pretty legendary. It's really hard to invent, so they all choose to "reinvent", maybe one day we'll get another classic... we'll see

I'm sure this won't be a staight up remake. Chances are, it will feature a fleshed out back story...something most fans always wanted, with him becoming the supernatural Freddy during the last third of the film or so. I could certainly live with that...as long as it's still Englund!

Who knows what this movie will be. First it was a Freddy vs. jason 2. Then it was a prequel and then it's a remake and then back to a prequel and then a sequel and now it's back to a remake. They better get their story straight. As for me I won't see it if Robert Englund isn't it. Englund is Freddy and thats all I have to say about that.
