With Paramount Pictures' Cloverfield (three reviews) already set to break the record for MLK weekend - $16 million Friday with $40 mil weekend estimate - Bloody-Disgusting has learned via a regular insider that talk of a sequel to the giant monster movie is already in progress. In the film a giant monster - and parasites from it's back - appear in New York City and completely decimate it. There is also chatter amongst our board members that "something" happens in the final frame of the movie that hints at the progression - although we missed it. If the sequel ever comes into fruition we have some suggestions for the title: Son of Cloverfield, Cloverfield vs. the Smog Monster, Cloverfield Attacks!, Cloverfield vs the World, Four Leaf Cloverfield, Cloverfieldy or maybe Cloverfield Attacks Japan!
a sequel was predictable, we all knew if this makes big money at the box office it will get a sequel. Will it be any good? That depends on if the novelty of the cam corder will still affect people in a second movey. So far the only major catastrophe/monster blockbusters that made a huge impact yet never got a sequel that i can think of is Independence Day and Armageddon
MAKE A SEQUEL WE ALL KNEW IT WOULD HAVE a sequel. its might even become the next godzillla. they might make the monster face another legedary monster. i just dont know if there going to stick with the cam corder idea. all in all MAKE A SEQUEL
honestly i dont see how they could do a sequel to this. it really seems like a stand alone film, and i know that the scene at the end gives promise of a sequel, but how could they do it without ruining the uniqueness of the first one?but if they do make one,I hope its not one of those from the government point of view types because that been done to death.
Apparently a satellite falls into the water in the final scene. I saw it but I didn't follow the online things and was told it was a satellite.
Also the "Its still alive" clip at the end of the credits, don't forget!
I think there is lots of ideas for a sequel, they could show more people from the same night, their stories (if they use the same "hand held" effect). I mean they weren't the only ones with a camera, there is news stores that could tie in, they could show the same night from a "big screen manner" (non hand held) way, or they could pick up from events the next day(s)... even showing the Lily girl if she makes it... or they could have more monsters (there is lots of talk that their is more than one) hell there could be a big attack on more parts of the world - there is lots of ideas and things for sequels. I loved the movie and think it's perfectly fine as a standalone - but I wouldn't pass up a chance to see the big beastie in action again, obviously it wouldn't have the same effect on me but neither will a second viewing of the original. I'd just hope they could come up with something equally as clever for marketing without overkilling the "it's real footage" gimick again... or spin it in a new way. I missed all these "catches" too, I'll go see it again next week though. I stayed away from all the online hype - to be spoiler free, and it seems this is one case where you shouldn't have and nothing is coincidence.
In the movie the clip is played backwards to hear ir go to http://boomp3.com/m/bd034dfca370 also check out wikipiedia and go to Cloverfield they have it listed in the plot outline but it tells the whole movie so spoiler alert.
i say the sequel moves across the country, as the creature decimates everything in its path..
"Cloverfield And Loathing In Las Vegas"
i think an actual big-budget destruction-Roland Emmerich style sequel for this would probably be really damn good.. as long as Abrams, Goddard and Reeves all produce, write and direct again.
Found this on darkhorizons website, it quotes a bit from the bloody-disgusting interview:
Meanwhile at the premiere of "Cloverfield" earlier in the week, director Matt Reeves was asked by Bloody Disgusting about the rumors that a sequel is already being planned. Reeves responded "Only time will tell. While we were on set making the film we talked about the possibilities and directions of how a sequel can go. The fun of this movie was that it might not have been the only movie being made that night, there might be another movie! In today's day and age of people filming their lives on their iphones and handy cams, uploading it to youtube...That was kind of exciting thinking about that
Someone should tell that guy that the iPhone does not have a video camera..yet
if there is a sequel, i really hope it takes place where the first movie left off, and not just a diff POV of the first attack(which is what the sequel is rumored to be). that just seems pointless
I don't know how good this source is. But my friends cousin who worked on the film said part 2 will be in los angeles that there was more than one monster. And this is the part that sounds kinda cool it comes from Japan the company the guy was leaving to go work for. Once again this is rumor but it sounds pretty damm good
First off, the movie is great. And the hand-held cam pov was a good feel I think. A sequal showing what happens next would be much better than same day/different people scenario. As for a possible name to the sequal, Cloverfield 2 would not work. "Cloverfield" is the name designate the U.S. military gave to the case, and the case was the video we all saw. A sequal, forgoing a rehash single video camera, would have a different name.
Some reasons a sequel makes sense:
[SPOILERS BELOW - DON'T READ IF YOU DON'T WANT TO SEE THEM]
--One of the key features of the movie is that no explanations were given. People are naturally curious, AND WON'T STOP SPECULATING, about the origin of the monster, the fate of the monster, the small monsters, etc. That's as tailor made for a sequel draw as you can get.
--There are plenty of characters that could continue the sequel, IF they want to build on any of the character's experiences. Such as:
Lily flies away in a heli, presumably safe.
Jamie is passed on out the couch at the party, presumably survives.
Jason is there, then he isn't, when the bridge is attacked, but we don't actually see his body or death. He could have been knocked into the river.
We don't actually see any proof of Rob and Beth's death. Obviously the military found the camcorder, with the tape intact. Perhaps Rob and/or Beth are sedated in a military hospital after the discovery.
--The producer/director stated in interviews that the genesis of the idea was upon seeing shelves of godzilla merchandise in Japan, and realized what a franchise it was. This is a business, and the word franchise has a certain appeal. There's money in a sequel, and even more in establishing the cloverfield monster as "america's godzilla". Money for years.
--There's absolutely no reason the first person POV would deter a sequel, and I would think they would avoid that same technique in a sequel. We all get the sense that the video is being viewed in a military office or bunker by the DoD text at the beginning. Well how natural to pick up the sequel in that room as they turn off the video, and start talking about how the monster took all they had and is still kicking butt. Or that it disappeared into the ocean minutes before the hammer came down on NY. Lots of easy paths to start a sequel from.

sequels often ruin movies; and i don't think cloverfield should have a sequel; that's just my opinion. all these ideas sound great, but like i said before, this movie doesn't exactly NEED a sequel. it's more-or-less perfect where it ends.
