Bloody-Disgusting has learned exclusively while at Sundance that Matthew Knight (pictured inside) will be returning as Jake in Columbia Pictures' The Grudge 3, which will see Toby Wilkins behind the camera. We also found out that the plan is to send the film direct-to-video. Filming begins this March in Bulgaria. In the third installment of the 187 million dollar worldwide box office smash The Grudge, a young Japanese woman holds the secret to ending the curse of the Grudge. She travels to the haunted Chicago apartment building where she encounters a family battling to survive. Together they confront the ghost of Kayako to save their souls from their impending tragic fate.

Why straight to DVD? Why not straight to dumpster bin like 2 should have been?

The Grudge 2 made close to 40 million dollars, a hell of a lot less then the original's 110 million. This pattern would likely continue so if the third installment went to theatres it would be a dud for sure. Never mind the fact that there shouldn't have been any sequels in the first place.
