'Cloverfield' Sequel Talk, Violent Plans!

Last night SpookyDan rocked the red carpet premiere of this year's first widely talked about feature film, Cloverfield (reviews), which arrives in theaters this Friday with a rash of positive reviews. On the carpet he had the chance to chat with writer Drew Goddard and director Matt Reeves who spill some small details on what could happen if a sequel were to be made and also reveals some interesting bits about what the original plan was for the film - a hard R. Read on for the skinny and check out what will probably be one of the best horror films of the year in theaters tomorrow.

On the red carpet for the premiere of CLOVERFIELD I chatted with writer Drew Goddard about the genesis of the film where he let us know that he certainly had more violent and bloody aspirations on his original draft. “The original draft was much more brutal. I wanted a hard R and we didn’t get a hard R, they read it and said this is way to brutal. I will say that I think we pushed the limits on a PG-13 rating we certainly shot a harder version than what is on the screen, we originally wanted it to be more bloody and disgusting.” He didn’t answer when asked if we will get to see that harder version when its released onto DVD. On the monster Goddard said, “It’s even better than I imagined as I was writing it!

I also had the chance to speak with Director Matt Reeves about sequels and about a certain shot toward the end of the film that kind of looks as if the monster is smaller than we had seen…possibly implying that there is another monster or baby monster, he had this to say, “The monster has a pretty consistent size in the film, and towards the end even though its shot in such a way that there is a perspective change that makes him look a bit smaller but it is in fact the monster at his biggest.” On sequels Reeves confirmed rumors, but was quick to set them aside. “Only time will tell. While we were on set making the film we talked about the possibilities and directions of how a sequel can go. The fun of this movie was that it might not have been the only movie being made that night, there might be another movie! In today’s day and age of people filming their lives on their iphones and handy cams, uploading it to youtube…That was kind of exciting thinking about that.

In a quick talk with star Lizzy Caplan, she had some stuff to say about horror in general comparing CLOVERFIELD to other popular genre films. “I’m not really a die hard horror fan, but I can appreciate a good scary film. I really like the spoof aspects of Shawn of the Dead and especially the remake of Dawn of the Dead.

CLOVERFIELD arrives in theaters everywhere tomorrow. In the film five young New Yorkers throw their friend a going-away party the night that a monster the size of a skyscraper descends upon the city. Told from the point of view of their video camera, the film is a document of their attempt to survive the most surreal, horrifying event of their lives.

Excellent ideas Reeves has there. Glad to see he's aiming for a Blair Witch 2 quality cash-in.

would be cool for a sequel....yea i would of liked the hard r better.......figures the studio execs are afraid to see a lil blood and guts....man i wonder if freddy jason (the original), and haloween (the original) along with tcm were to be made today wonder if they would try and make it pg13 so that the stupid teeny boppers can see it or whatever.

the only reason they release it pg-13 is so they can get it to a wider audience. The blood and guts isnt the issue its the amount of seats they fill. Remember blood and guts isnt the only thing that gets you R ratings

I too would have loved for this to be rated R. I hope we do get something more brutal when the DVD comes out. Can't wait for this weekend to see this.

I don't see this as the sort of movie that would benefit from being rated R. It's a giant thing against a city.. unless there are smaller creatures too that I'm not aware of. But HorrorChick.. the original TCM actually was made under the impression that it could get a pg rating(since pg-13 didn't exist back then). That's why there's so little gore and bad language.

I saw it and thought it rocked.

personally, i think excessive brutality would've been a little too much. it had a good amount of blood, like when marleena (was that her name?) was bit in the tunnels, and the soldier with his chest ripped open; it wouldn't have been as good if they focused more on the gore, rather than what was focused on. it was perfect like it was.
