Another Negative Review For 'Aliens vs Predator: Requiem'

After my extremely negative review last night (here) of 20th Century Fox's Aliens vs Predator: Requiem, I was praying that everyone was on my side, and so far it looks that way. Today BC sent us in his opinion on the film, which follows many of the same footsteps as my review. In short, the movie sucks. Save your pennies and go see the The Orphanage.

Aliens vs Predator: Requiem
Review by: BC
Score: 1.5 out of 5 Skulls

First off, I didn’t hate the first AvP. It wasn’t that good, but there were moments I really liked, and it was great to see Lance on the big screen again. So I went into the sequel with about the same expectations. Sadly, even those weren’t met. Not even satisfying on a “dumb fun” level, Alien Vs. Predator: Requiem is without a doubt one of the stupidest movies I’ve ever seen. And since just two days before I watched National Treasure 2, a movie that told us that Mt. Rushmore was carved for the sole purpose of hiding a clue that would lead to a lost city of gold that could have been used to restart the Civil War, that's really saying something.

For all its faults, at least the first film FELT like a franchise film. We had the team of scientists and badasses, like the first two Alien films, and, well, some Predators, like in the Predator movies. Our group this time? A bunch of kids, a sheriff, an ex-con who constantly reminds everyone he's an ex-con, a waitress, a female soldier who just returned home... in other words, a stock motley crew out of any generic action/horror movie. There's a brief mention of the Company in the film's final scene, but otherwise this feels like any generic Sci-Fi original movie albeit with better effects (one nice thing I will say about the film - the effects are great throughout, with no bad CG and lots of decent blood gags).

Remember Ash, Burke, and the other great human (or at least, humanoid) villains from the other films? Here the primary human antagonist (apart from Robert Joy's military guy who appears in the film for about 47 total seconds) is "Dale", a punk high school kid who punches out the hero's brother (how half-assed does a movie have to be that it doesn't even give the human conflict to the actual hero?) because they are both after the same girl. Yup, if you ever watched one of the other movies in the series and thought that it didn't have enough scenes of high school kids throwing each other into a pool and doing PG rated stripteases, then this is the film for you!

Speaking of the rating, lots of folks, myself included, were excited when this film was announced to be R rated, an upgrade from the PG-13 original. Sadly, while the gore content is upped and there are a few f-bombs thrown into the dialogue, the film is aimed DIRECTLY at a younger audience, content wise, making the rating all the more puzzling. In theory, no one under 17 can see the film, and yet no intelligent person ABOVE 17 can possibly enjoy it. But then again, this is FOX, who have never made the least bit of sense when it comes to their franchise films.

As directors, the Strause brothers certainly know how to keep the pace moving (maybe too fast; this is the shortest film in either franchise), but their technical skills leave much to be desired. Several of the action scenes are shot so close up and edited so quickly, it becomes confusing as to what is happening (I can't see this being DP Daniel Pearl's fault, since he shot both the original Texas Chain Saw Massacre and the remake, the former being one of the greatest horror movies ever and the latter made worthwhile solely on the visuals). And I'm not usually the type to complain about these types of things; for example, there isn't a single moment in Armageddon where I am confused by the on-screen action, and that film is universally reviled for its editing style. Incidentally, this film shares a writer (Shane Salerno) with that film, and much like the first AvP, Armageddon can possibly be re-evaluated by its harshest critics after they sit through this goddamn thing.

Reiko Aylesworth (aka Michelle Dessler from 24) is cute, and in the maybe 20 seconds of screentime where she is kicking ass (pretty much all seen in the trailer), she does well. But her character disappears for long periods of time, and for the most part she just comes off like any other random person from the group, rather than the badass female warrior that any self-respecting Alien movie should have. I half expected her character to get killed off maybe halfway through, for 'shock value', but they don't even bother to do that much with her.

Some of the dialogue in this movie may someday end up on a list of the worst movie dialogue of all time. There's some nonsense about a clock behind a hot girl that, even 2 hours later, my brain has forced itself to forget. The writer(s?) also continually set things up that never pay off, such as a pair of night vision goggles that Aylesworth gives her daughter. Will the Predator find them and look through them for a visual gag? Will she help the Predator find an Alien with them? Nope, they are forgotten about halfway through the film, after continually referring to them over the course of 3-4 scenes. It's bad enough they take time away from the Predators and Aliens to try to develop the human characters, but if you're not even going to follow through with it, it just becomes insulting and even more pointless. In interviews, the Strause brothers claim that they wanted to populate the film with people you can identify with, which was lacking in the other films since most people don't know tough marines, or prisoners, or space pirates. But you know what? I'd RATHER know those people than hang out with any of the fucking dipshits in this movie. Apart from a waitress who gets killed in her second scene, I didn't care if a single one of these people lived or died (and the only reason I wanted the waitress to live is because she was pretty hot).

If the film does well at the box office (which will, if nothing else, prove R rated horror isn't dead), a 3rd film will likely come along. If so, I just hope that whoever writes and/or directs it remembers one thing: The name of the movie is Aliens Vs. Predator. That's what we want to see. I don't think a single person on the planet would give a shit if there were no humans in the film at all. But if there MUST be a group of people that the audience is supposed to identify with, for the love of Christ make them at least somewhat interesting and likable.

Boo for BD reviews. I was thoroughly entertained as was everyone I was with. The acting was NOT that bad and I liked the characters. I can't believe I even finished reading this considering they started the review with AVP wasn't that bad. The first one was a disgrace to film making. I'm hoping for a 3rd film here and I know I'm not alone. I think the major problem here is that the reviewers are looking for more of an Alien 1 movie and have forgotten about the cheese in all of these films.

Saw this yesterday and loved it. 10 times better than AVP! I just hope this does well so we can see a sequel in space. Don't know what BD was expecting from this, but I found it a vast improvement over the first.

But i bet there will be plenty of "forgivness" when that whack as fuc* "Saw 5" comes around......

1.5 skull are you people fucking retarded? what the hell were you expecting the next great sci/fi horror movie?!?! Your all dip shits, I throughly enjoyed the movie, and well admit it had some issues...but a 1.5 a 1? Need I remind you how terrible AVP1 was? Acting was...BAH...ending was bahh... other then that...very fun movie..maybe its just because I had my expectations so low due to the absolute shit quality of the first one...but I came home figuring B-D would give it a good 2.5 maybe even 3....a 1.5....1....jesus...

JGrayland

Also, Guardian, where does he mention the acting? All the review points out is that the characters suck. That's a problem of the script, not the actors.

this movie is awsome, one of my favorites this year. does anyone really expect top notch acting here? did you think the predator was gonna get an oscar? no it was a fun movie with a lot of action, cool death scenes, and kick ass fights

theGuardian86

Hey Grayland, have you read the other review as well? And if they stated obdiously that AVP wasn't that good it would be different but they way it was written was to inform that AVP was a decent movie. It definitely looks like more people agree with me than disagree. A 1.5 is way too low of a rating for this film. I usually count on BD for reviews but lately it seems they're really drownin in the toilet. I never read the review for Freddy VS Jason but if it's a bad one then fuck that. Predator was a popcorn film and the sequel had less cheese but more depth into the Predator's history. When will reviewers learn that anything with a Versus title should NOT be taken too seriously. It's all in good fun and I had a great time watching this one. It wasn't perfect but none of the Alien OR Predator were either.

1.5 is way too low a score for this film. I'd give it at least a 3 IMO. AVP was way too friendly a film, different species team ups is by far the worst concept ever. AVP-R is a badass movie and gives back my hope in VS films.

Well if you don't think Alien or Aliens is perfect (or at least, as close to perfect as those types of movies can get), then ya, I can fully understand why you'd like this sort of film. Enjoy! Maybe someday Ridley Scott can pull a Lucas and go back and "fix" his film by adding in a scene where Brett and Parker fight over Lambert in a swimming pool. That's the stuff people want to see!

Back in the day when we saw the red banner trailer I thought to myself "I hope we didn't saw all the good parts and the rest of the movie sucks" so far it seems that happened, but in the end I guess you just have to watch it yourself, I think I'll wait for the dvd though....or until I get it from the net.

As a journalist and writer, I have to say that the reviews here have gone downhill considerably over time. Firstly, the things you "complain" about (in both reviews) are way off the mark, and if anyone isn't following through with anything, it's the reviewers on this site not following through with in-depth descriptions of the films they're reviewing. While this film was not stellar by any means, there are some very positive aspects, such as the Predator being a far more serious character than in any previous film. The Aliens looked excellent, following the look of "Aliens". The Pred-Alien had a level of cognition never previously seen in the Alien creature, due to taking on traits of the Predator --which is natural when the Alien is birthed from any host, but was put down in the first review as being "too much like the Predator"-- and the way the film made you have to pay attention. For example, I've seen no one mention it, but the Pred-Alien is actually the Queen, hence why it "regurgitates" Chest Bursters, such as in mammals that give live birth. It picked a pregnant women in the hospital scene upon seeing how large her stomach was, knowing it could implant in her several Chest Bursters at once. This review rants about the night vision goggles, and how such a thing it not played upon in the film. Did you pay attention? No, she doesn't help the Predator. But even though it was an obviously set-up, they do come back into play when she (the child) looks out the window and there's an Alien in the woods just outside in their yard. The acting wasn't horrible, though it was mostly droll on the parts of the cliche punk high-school guys. The film was choppy, with much room for far more, and visually a little too dark in much of the fight scenes between the Predator and the Aliens. However, there was a great deal of potential, killed by the fact that, these days, films are almost forced to be under two hours, which is not enough time to really play upon the good base of atmosphere, aesthetic and visuals they had as a foundation. Certainly, there was much room for improvement, however the film did not hold back in any manner, even pushing the limits in it's brutality of horror and killing a child (boy in the woods) via a Chest Burster. I could go on, but the point is that, if you're going to attempt to run a large reputable website reviewing films, you need to cover all aspects of a film, be more objective and pay far more attention to detail. The film was no masterpiece, but it certainly was no disgrace, either. Writers (including journalists) need to have an artistic mind and talent for writing, and not come-off like some average "John Q" with an opinion that could be heard by any dim-whit on the street, if one so wanted to hear such an opinion.

Wow!I haven't seen the film yet since it won't be playing in my country untill mid-late January but i am amazed at how many people seem to disagree with the reviews. For one i hope most of you people are right cause i am really looking forward to seeing this film! Secondly i have to say this,i also think many of BD's reviews suck the few months. I mean giving TCM: The Beginning an almost perfect scored when most people thought it SUCKED big time was the last straw for me. If i like AVP2 then i wont pay attention to any more of the reviews in this site

You guys are all smoking damn CRACK! Are you kidding me are you guys so easily entertained by such B.S. This had to be one of the all time WORST movies to grace the screen. I hated AVP 1 and actually would watch that 10 times over then watch another scene from this crap. Since when does a ALIEN trade ROCKY punches? Last I checked Alien blood was ACIDIC but yet when the PRed rips the Predalien's mini mouth out the blood splashes on him like water. Hmm the fact the military was lame as shit. You have one guy run to a car looking through the driver's side a splits econd later a 7 foot alien is standing next to him. YOU DIDNT SEE THAT BIG ASS ALIEN ALREADY STANDING THERE ALL THAT TIME!? Since when does it take 2 mins for the gestation period the last I checked it was 48 hours. All the charchter's sucked ass! The actions cenes poorly shot and poorly lit. Granted Predster had some cool ass weapons but who cares. And yeah like Mr. D said WTF was with the whole CLEANER angle? Why would the preds who are planets/galaxies away care if us puney human's found some evidence. We havent even conquered MARS yet let alone figuring out there are PREDATORS out there. That PRedalien was the most lumbering lame ass put on screen. Or how about when Cheesy the pizza guy gets speared by Predalien's MASSIVE tail in hospital and cheesy is just fine after! Huh? Dude you should be DEAD! Or the pointless maternity ward scene, I know what you guys were going for when shooting the scene by trying to DISTRUB us by seeing preggo women getting force preggoed again by Predalien but it was a waste. If you do something like that you need to build up to it. Other wise it's justa randoms cene someoen on set prob said "U know what would be reallllllllllllllly cool". You know a movie's bad when the boys from THE HOOD walk out mid way through the movie! Do youself a favor go see SWEENY TODD instead!

Another thing when Predator arrives to clean up the mess of any clues that they are the ALIENs exist. Tell me why the hell then would he skin that one guy and hang him in the tree to be found.
