Christmas time, a season for giving, love, bright lights, and a colorfully decorated tree, but for some of us we enjoy all of the above with a little blood mixed into our holidays. What holiday is complete without themed horror movies, as Christmas is fast approaching it's time to make a list and check it twice, for there is no better way to get into the festive spirit than with a few good ole fashioned Christmas themed horror movies! So get comfy, curl up on the couch, grab a glass of egg nog and hope that you’ve been naughty enough this year that some crazed Santa will be visiting your chimney very soon. Read on and enjoy.

"So have yourself a scary little Christmas, it's not like the ones you used to know."

Christmas time, a season for giving, love, bright lights, and a colorfully decorated tree, but for some of us we enjoy all of the above with a little blood mixed into our holidays. What holiday is complete without themed horror movies, as Christmas is fast approaching its time to make a list and check it twice, for there is no better way to get into the festive spirit than with a few good ole fashioned Christmas themed horror movies. So get comfy, curl up on the couch, grab a glass of egg nog and hope that you’ve been naughty enough this year that some crazed Santa will be visiting your chimney very soon.

Here is a list of some Christmas themed horror movies (whilst most are really not that much to rave about, our choices are limited and in some cases hard to find) and also a couple New Year’s themed horror movies to finish off the season:

Silent Night, Deadly Night (1986)

On Christmas Eve a man and his wife are driving home with their two young children in the car after visiting family. A man dressed as Santa is pulled over on the side of the road who they stop to help. The man dressed as Santa kills the parents and leaves the kids there. When on of the two grows up and leaves the orphanage he gets a job at a toy store, when he is asked to dress up as Santa, he loses it and goes on a killing spree.

Silent Night, Deadly Night 2 (1987)

Mainly flashbacks from the first installment as told by Ricky the younger son who is in a mental institution being interviewed by a shrink on Christmas Eve. Let’s just say he escapes and picks up where his brother left off.

Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

Enter an extraordinary world filled with magic and wonder -- where every holiday has its own special land ... and imaginative, one-of-a-kind characters! THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS tells the heartfelt tale of Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King of Halloween Town, and all things that go bump in the night. Bored with the same old tricks and treats, he yearns for something more, and soon stumbles upon the glorious magic of Christmas Town! Jack decides to bring this joyful holiday back to Halloween Town. But as his dream to fill Santa's shoes unravels, it's up to Sally, the rag doll who loves him, to stitch things back together. This critically acclaimed movie milestone captured the heart and imagination of audiences everywhere with its Academy Award(R)-nominated stop-motion effects, engaging Grammy(R)-nominated music, and the genius of Tim Burton (BATMAN, PLANET OF THE APES). THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHIRSTMAS -- a delightful treat the whole family will enjoy!

Jack Frost (1996)

A killer snowman is created when a serial killer is melted by genetic acid which combines with snow.

Gremlins (1984)

A man buys a Mogwai as a Christmas present for his son. The young boy is told to keep the pet away from water, out of the light and never to feed it after midnight. Inadvertently, the creature is dampened and almost instantly, produces half a dozen furry replicas of itself --which continue to multiply and turn the small town upside-down.

Black Christmas (1975)

During the holiday season a house of sorority girls are harassed by a person making crank phone calls, when the girls start to disappear one by one it starts to shape up to one creepy Christmas.

Christmas Evil; You Better Watch Out (1980)

After a boyhood trauma during Christmas, a man is slightly obsessed with the holiday for the rest of his life. He becomes a toy maker and keeps track of the children that are naughty and nice. He ends up snapping and goes on a killing rampage.

Don’t Open ‘Til Christmas (1984)

Someone is killing anyone in a Santa suit and the police try to stop him before his antics become a yearly tradition.

Child's Play (1988)

When Charles Lee Ray needs to get quick escape from cop, Mike Norris, he takes his soul and buries it into playful, seemingly good guy doll Chucky. Little does he know a little boy by the name of Andy Barclay will be the new owner of him soon-to-come. Charles confides in Andy while he commits numerous murders. Once the adults catch up to Andy's story as truth, it's too late.

Santa Claws (1996)

A cinema “scream queen” spends her Christmas battling a deranged neighbor who dresses in a Santa suit and starts killing the actresses friends and co-workers so that he can have her all to himself.

New Year’s Evil (1980)

A nationally televised New Year’s Eve punk rock party sets the stage for “Murders at Midnight”.

Misery (1990)

Novelist Paul Sheldon crashes his car on a snowy Colorado road. He is found by Annie Wilkes, the "number one fan" of Paul's heroine Misery Chastaine. Annie is also somewhat unstable, and Paul finds himself crippled, drugged and at her mercy.

Edward Scissorhands (1990)

Once upon a time in a castle high on a hill lived an inventor whose greatest creation was named Edward. Although Edward had an irresistible charm, he wasn t quite perfect. The inventor s sudden death left him unfinished, with sharp shears of metal for hands. Edward lived alone in the darkness until one day a kind Avon lady took him home to live with her family. And so began Edward s fantastical adventures in a pastel paradise known as Suburbia.

OTHER HOLIDAY FILMS OF NOTE:

Bloody New Year (1986)

Some unwanted guests are in for a bad New Year’s Eve when a hotel is attacked by angry corpses.

Silent Night, Deadly Night 3: Better Watch Out! (1989)

Ricky is now in a coma and has been for the last six years, a crazy doctor gets a blind psychic girl to try and make contact with Ricky, but she ends up waking him from his coma and he is able to return to his punishing of the naughty.

Silent Night, Deadly Night 4: Initiation (1990)

Stemming away from the traditional story of the series, an L.A. reporter is caught up in a cult of feminists, she learns that she is the target for the group’s ceremony and has to try to get away from them.

Silent Night, Deadly Night 5: The Toy Maker (1992)

A crazed toy maker makes killer toys that turn on their owners.

To All A Good Night (1980)

It’s Christmas break at the Calvin Finishing School for Girls, and the students are planning a big party while the president of the school is away. A group of boys show up and the fun begins! That is, until mysterious killer starts bumping off couples one by one. The police show up and promise to keep everyone safe, but they prove ineffectual against the crazed psycho. Could the killings have anything to do with the girl who was killed in an initiation stunt at the school a few years earlier?

Jack Frost 2: Revenge of the Mutant Snowman (2000)

He’s back! After being resurrected when a cup of coffee falls into the tank of anti-freeze that the killer was stored in.

We all know that there are apparently 50 million different Christmas albums out there, but horror fans didn’t get missed out on, there is a Tales from the Crypt Christmas album entitled Have Yourself a Scary Little Christmas that was released in 1994.

To all of you gore mongers out there, Merry Christmas to all and to all a good fright!

Was Child's Play winter holiday themed? I thought Andy got Chucky for his Birthday. Apparently I'm in need of a refresher viewing! I'm glad to see Gremlins make the list this year...such a forgotten gem!

Now...it might seem like telling you how to do your job, Thats because I am. That list is swell and all but you obviously forgot about Santas Slay. Its the best Christmas themed Horror/Comedy starring a Jewish Wrester youre bound to find. Do the right thing. Edit the list.

Chucky is a Christmas gift.... Also this isnt a top ten list, it's just a random holiday list. Santas Slay can burn in hell.

I believe my (very old) review of Santa's Slay says it all... http://www.bloody-disgusting.com/review/443 It 's even a bad review of the movie. I just couldn't care enough!

Okay...that's good that this isn't a top ten list. Silent Night, Deadly Night 2 sucks...but it is funny. GARBAGE DAY! But I don't know if I would label Child's Play holiday horror. Yeah, it takes place around Christmas, but it isn't Christmas themed.

You got the year wrong for Black Christmas... it's supposed to be 1974, not '75....

Andy got Chucky for his birthday! And it takes place around winter but not really christmas it self.

Um Mr.D? The trailer for Child's Play even points out that clearly Chucky was given on Andy's birthday.

Here u go...top 3: 1. A Christmas Story (Yeah I know, not a horror movie but a classic)"FUUUUUUUDDDDDGE!" 2. Bad Santa (Unrated) Not a HORROR movie but pretty damn fucked up and funny, I mean...bad santa fucking that fat bitch in the dressing room while saying "you ain't gonna shit right for a monthh!" C'mon, a fucking classic. Plus, it was John Ritter's last movie. That's how u go out with a BANG. And if it wasn't Ritter's last flick, I'm sure a fellow geek will correct me. 3. Gremlins...I mean how can you NOT love these little fuckers??? 4. Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas. It's Tim Burton and stop animation. 'Nuff said. A MASTERPIECE. 5. Silent night, Deadly Night. FUCK YEAH MAN...put the kids to bed and enjoy this shit. Time to bleed. )I'm sure they'll remake this one one day) But, hey, that's just ME. Bloody Xmas everyone. myspace.com/PhraseFlow Let's be friends

Thanks for the list Mr. D! It's sad how people bitch about how you didn't list every christmas themed horror movie ever made. They don't seem to understand how these are just some recommendations of yours.

Chucky was definitely a birthday gift. Remember the scene where he wakes up his mom, and she asks him how old he was that day.... Not only that, but the case even says it was a birthday gift.

Excellent list. I watched Silent Night, Deadly Night last night for the first time and got a kick out of it. The scariest part to me was when they were riding in the stationwagon and she was sitting in the front seat holding a baby in her lap without seatbelts or a child seat or anything. *shudders* I'm with the Santa's Slay crowd. Man I love that film. It should become a holiday classic.
