First Footage Seen at AFM!
Dark Floors: From the insane band Lordi, I wasn't expecting such an interesting looking film. Sure they might have stage presence, but that doesn't mean it'll translate to film. But after seeing what Rob Zombie conjured up and now Lordi, I'm starting to think maybe Marilyn Manson and the other shock-rockers should get a move on! DARK FLOORS was easily the highlight footage of AFM. The movie looked extremely dark, eerie and scary. The special FX were so incredibly well done. I can safely say that even if the movie isn't all that great, it looks amazing.
Outpost: This was the worst footage I saw at AFM. I saw a good ten boring minutes of this film and can't help but wondering what made it suck. Was it the editing? The directing? The music? The problem was that the production value looked like sh-t and the acting was very fake - you can tell it's a period piece on a low budget. Watching the ten minutes I got to see two kills, both of which were insanely retarded. Both kills featured some sort of super soldier/monster sloooowwwwllllyyy killing another solider. Each scene felt like an eternity and I barely even make it through the ten minutes. Ill pass on this one.
Splinter: On the lighter side of things, the same company that did OUTPOST also did this little gem, SPLINTER. Directed by upcoming filmmaker Toby Wilkins (THE GRUDGE 3), SPLINTER looks like that low-budget gorefest that we all love to watch over and over again. The promo was a great tease as we only got one good shot of the monster, which was phenomenal. The acting looked barely above par, but the production value was there. In my opinion this looks like the type of film that will either make it or break it based on the kills and gore. Thank god Magnet picked it up for US so we can hopefully see it soon!
Eden Log: Another film acquired by Magnet and another kickass looking film. We've been covering this pretty heavy on B-D so I was quite excited to see the promo footage for this little gem. The movie looks like it had an insane budget as it takes place in an underground future. The film looked like a beautiful hybrid of sci-fi and horror; every scene was tinted blue, which creates a level of suspense similar to THE RING remake. I think this one is going to be the sleeper hit of 2008.
Alphabet Killer: From Rob Schmidt, director of WRONG TURN, comes more horror! The production value was off the wall crazy in this super short clip, but unfortunately beyond that I couldn’t make any judgments. I just hope it's as cool as it sounds.
Splice: We were shown production art from this film, from the director of CUBE. Being produced by Guillermo del Toro and TRANSFORMERS producer Don Murphy makes me think that without a shadow of a doubt this movie will ROCK. There are few people I think can turn even sh-t into a gem and that's del Toro. In short the images we saw made me think that SPLICE is a modern SPIECIES. The creature, which apparently was raised as a genetic mutation, has wings and a stinger in her tail. If this sucker is bloody, I think it will have it all!
The Broken: A Psychological thriller from the same company behind SPLICE. The promo looked like it took place mostly in one location and seemed like something you'll enjoy if you have patients; even though it wasn't boring, it wasn't all that eventful either. It wasn't my type of film, but it looked like a nice little film that some people might enjoy. The only thing that really grabbed me was it starred the chick from 300.
Carriers: Coming from Paramount Vantage, this looks like it comes right out of the 28 DAYS LATER universe. Nuff said.
Chemical Wedding: Written by Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden, this was some of the worst footage I saw at AFM. I was expecting some crazy demon-filled bloody horror film and instead it was a lot of cheesy dialogue, naked chicks and fire. It was the ultimate in bad demon-worshiping efforts. Im not looking forward to this anymore.
Reeker 2: The promo opens with two robbers flying down a stretch of road at what seems like as 100 mph. Everything is fine and dandy until they slam into an invisible wall. Then one guy is pushing up against an invisible barrier while the other, well, is missing half of his head. His nose is gone and the inside of his head is exposed, the FX work was brilliant. Im told this is only a taste of where this sequel goes. Count me in.
Dance of the Dead: When I was introduced to this film by Gregg Bishop (The Other Side) I pictured another crappy direct to DVD title… instead what I saw was wonderful. Gregg is known for making huge movies with pennies for a budget and this was no exception. DANCE looked not only hilarious but disgusting and bloody. He understands that a real zombie movie involved exploding heads, missing body parts and decomposing bodies. Out of everything I saw this was one of my favorite promos and I cannot wait to see it.
It’s Alive: Yup, I got to see the first ever footage for the IT’S ALIVE remake. I heard through the grapevine that the script is TERRIBLE, but the footage I saw was pretty amazing and I love the subplot about how the mother is protecting her son no matter how vicious it is. The film looked extremely bloody and insanely violent and from what Im told the baby will evolve throughout the film into a creature. I cant wait for this one.
Train: A remake of one of my favorite ‘80s movies, TERROR TRAIN, this film looked atrocious. They completely threw away the original idea of having a masquerade on a train and took things in the torture direction. It was violent just for the sake of being violent and incredible stupid. The special FX (which might not have been completed) work looked terrible as we saw the exterior of the train passing by. This could be a fun little direct to video feature, but don’t expect any depth.
