We broke the news here in September, but today it was officially announced that TLA Releasing has secured non-theatrical and home video rights for the United States to The Living and the Dead written and directed by Simon Rumley. The film is currently playing in theaters and will be released on March 25, 2008 through the company’s Danger After Dark label. You can read all about this major acquisition by reading on.

TLA Releasing has secured non-theatrical and home video rights for the United States to THE LIVING AND THE DEAD (2006, United Kingdom) written and directed by Simon Rumley. The film is currently playing in theaters and will be released on March 25, 2008 through the company’s Danger After Dark label.

TLA acquired the film from Imagination Worldwide, LLC; TLA Releasing was represented by TLA partner and Director of Acquisitions Richard A. Wolff and the deal was negotiated by Travis Stevens, Director of Acquisitions & Marketing, Imagination Worldwide, LLC.

In what Time Out New York calls “a truly haunted movie,” THE LIVING AND THE DEAD turns its lens on Lord Donald and Lady Nancy Brocklebank (Roger Lloyd Pack and Kate Fahey), who live in the magnificent but decrepit Longleigh House with their mentally challenged son James (Leo Bill). While Donald is in negotiations to sell the home, Nancy becomes seriously ill so he must leave the estate for a few days in order to pay for her operation. The father requests the family nurse to take control while he is gone, but James wants to prove that he is an adult and more then capable of taking care of his mom, so he quickly locks the nurse out of the house. He begins to mix his own medication with his mother’s and as the stress of looking after an ailing patient begins to build, James condition worsens; setting off a chain of events both chilling and disturbing.

“TLA Releasing is a fiercely independent company and has easily defied categorization,” said writer/director Simon Rumley. “I'm very excited about TLA's imminent release of my film and hope that it’s the beginning of a mutually rewarding, beneficial working relationship!”

THE LIVING AND THE DEAD has played at film festivals all over the world, winning multiple awards including including Best Film at the 2007 Austin FantasticFest and a Special Jury Mention at 2007 Sitges International Film Festival. The film opened October 26, 2007 in New York, sparking Salon.com to tag the film as“ part neo-gothic horror, part empathetic schizoid freak-out, The Living and the Dead suggests an unlikely cross between Spider and Requiem for a Dream.”

Rumley is currently working on adapting author Poppy Z. Brite’s popular, horror novel Exquisite Corpse, a New Orleans set adventure about a gay serial killer who finally meets his match.
