One of the coolest promo reels I saw at this year's AFM was for Toby Wilkins' Splinter, which is set in and around a quiet gas station on a lonely freeway, where a terrifying virus-like monster inhabits the bodies of its victims and drives them with a relentless lust for blood. Today we learned that Magnet Releasing (Magnolia) has acquired the film for North American distribution. Read on for the details and the first ever image. Toby Wilkins is currently prepping to direct The Grudge 3 for Ghost House Pictures.

Magnet Acquires North American Rights to Toby Wilkins' "SPLINTER"

NEW YORK - Nov. 1, 2007 - Magnet (www.magnetreleasing.com) announced today that is had pre-bought North America rights to Toby Wilkins' horror-thriller SPLINTER, which is currently nearing completion. In the vein of classic creature features, SPLINTER finds a young couple held hostage by an ex-convict on the run besieged in an isolated gas station by an insatiable parasite that absorbs the corpses of its victims. The creature grows more horrifying with each murder, until the claustrophobia becomes unbearable for the three trapped protagonists, forcing a showdown with the monster.

Magnet is the recently launched genre arm of the Wagner/Cuban Companies' Magnolia Pictures, specializing in films from the vanguard of horror, action, comedy and Asian cinema.

"With its taut, terrific script and Toby Wilkins' directorial and special effects talents, SPLINTER has a great shot at being a truly iconic horror film," said Magnolia Pictures President Eamonn Bowles.

Wilkins, a longtime visual effects artist who's worked on films by Brett Ratner, James Cameron, Bryan Singer and Jonathan Demme, makes his feature film debut with SPLINTER. He was recently tapped to direct the third installment of the THE GRUDGE franchise for Sam Raimi's Ghost House Pictures. He previously worked for Raimi as director of the short film series TALES FROM THE GRUDGE, which preceded the release of THE GRUDGE 2.

"Its great to have such a savvy partner as Magnolia, and Toby looks set to deliver a really cool, innovative frightener," said Content's Jamie Carmichael.

The deal was negotiated by Magnolia's Senior Vice President Tom Quinn and Head of Business Affairs, Jason Janego, along with Micah Green and Brian Kavanaugh Jones of CAA and Jamie Carmichael of ContentFilm. Magnet will release the film theatrically in 2008.
