We broke the new exclusively here on Bloody-Disgusting that George A. Romero will be directing a sequel to Diary of the Dead, which was acquired by Dimension Films for a theatrical release in 2008. Although there's still no title for Diary of the Dead 2, you can read on for word from Romero and co.
Months in advance of the highly anticipated theatrical release of George A. Romero’s Diary of the Dead, Artfire Films and Romero-Grunwald Productions have greenlit a sequel, it was announced today at the opening of this year's American Film Market. Diary had its successful world premiere at the 2007 Toronto International Film Festival where it was sold to The Weinstein Company by Cinetic Media in one of the festival’s biggest acquisition deals. Diary will be released in North America by TWC in early 2008.
Romero will direct the sequel from his own screenplay. Romero-Grunwald Productions’ Peter Grunwald will produce with Artfire Films’ Artur Spigel and Ara Katz. Executive Producers will be Dan Fireman of Artfire and Sam Englebardt. Voltage Pictures and Cinetic Media will continue to handle foreign and domestic sales respectively for the Artfire/RGP alliance.
The sequel continues where the first “diary” left off. Fighting their way out of a mansion through a horde of ravenous zombies, the survivors escape to a remote island, only to be plunged into a siege for survival with a civilization of the dead. Principal photography is slated to begin in Spring 2008.
Says Romero, "The reception for 'Diary' has been really gratifying. We had a great team on that film and it's exciting to have the opportunity to keep everyone together and hit the ground running again."
