The other night B-D fav Steven C. Miller (Automaton Transfusion) was announced as attached to Area 52, the adaptation to the popular comic book. Today not only has he released a statement, but your first look at some concept art. Read on for the skinny.
Writer-director Steven C. Miller writes on his Blog:
This double blind facility is located off the grid in the middle of Antarctica. A52 is home to some of the most deadly and hi-tech military/alien weapons that are still being tested.
The story is going to revolve around a nurse, Monica Lane, who has been transfered to A52 under the notion she will be helping find a cure to a major biological threat. Quickly she discovers this place is not what it seems and before she has time to react the facility comes under attack by a group of deadly Mercenaries, who take everyone hostage and unleash a menacing force. Now Monica along with the rest of the Area 52 crew must enter the huge warehouse full of millions of crates and find a way to stop the mercenaries by using all of the untested and unknown military/alien weaponry.
What I loved about the comics is all the crazy weapons and technology that are discovered in this gigantic secret warehouse. For me it was like being given a key to Toys R Us when I was 8 and told 'Have Fun". I get the chance to not only create a terrifying environment but also a warehouse full of never before seen technology. I want to bring a real sort of 'Die Hard' meets 'Indiana Jones' to this sci-fi film. I love the mixing of genres as long as it is done right. I also love comic book films and know fans of this comic will expect nothing short of Balls Out Action and Horror. So that is what i plan on delivering.
Here is the first Concept Drawing I have for the look inside of AREA 52. One thing I've created for the film that I'm excited about is the 'Bumper Cranes'. Which are named that because they move along the ceiling in any direction imaginable similar to how bumper cars move using electricity. Hope you enjoy the first of MANY to come.
