Ever since AMITYVILLE HORROR and TURISTAS we’ve always felt here at B-D that Melissa George is a true fan of the genre, and someone who takes it quite seriously. It’s fantastic to see her in yet another horror film, 30 DAYS OF NIGHT, which is possibly one of the scariest vampire films ever. And consistent to her other genre roles, she once again plays a strong female lead. “
It was very hard to turn it down [as I] really wanted to be part of a vampire film,” she explains also explaining how scary the graphic novel appeared to her, “
In the graphic novel, it’s not your average vampire… 30 DAYS OF NIGHT is beyond horror, it’s vampires [in] exaggerated horror.”
Besides liking the graphic novel, the role appeared tough, which is why she wanted to do it, “
I like tough roles, which is why I like horror. They have strong women.” Just how tough was it? Imagine being covered in blood eating breakfast, “
It was very difficult coming home at 7 AM… the amount of times I went to breakfast covered [in blood].”
Speaking of blood, 30 DAYS OF NIGHT is extraordinary bloody as the vampires aren’t clean eaters, George tells us why they have such rude manners, “
[the vampires] wanted to keep what they had and not infect others. It was quite bloody [because of this].” She also chatted about how freaky the vampires sounded, besides the invented language they made an interesting sound, “
They do this inward screeching sound… it’s very creepy!”
A lot of times you hear about turmoil between directors and their stars, or even weird stories about co-stars, she had nothing but praises. In terms of working with David Slade she tells us, “
He’s a modern day Hitchcock. He never raised his voice, never lost his head.” But the coolest (no pun intended) story was about crazy co-star Ben Foster. George jokes about a funny rumor floating around set that Foster “
gets into it for real… I heard he filled his coat with ice to feel cold!”
Towards the end she loosened up a bit and started to joke explaining that “
When they (the vampires) are all walking towards us it looks like THRILLER (pictured below).”
Spoilers Follow: She also continuing on her earlier sequel talk with a good final line. In the end of the film there’s a moment where Slade zooms into George’s eyes, she blinks and credits roll, she explains the final shot, “
maybe she’s infected or maybe [it means] I’m gonna get those f-ckers!” Melissa George is ready to kick some vamp ass in a sequel, so let’s hit up the theaters October 19 and ensure it happens! - Mr. Disgusting
