Platinum Dunes is hard at work casting their remake of Near Dark for Rogue Pictures. The film is set to be their next production with plans to release enxt year. Today word got out on a casting breakdown that revealed some changes to the storyline and character 'Caleb'. Read on for the skinny. Like the 1987 original by Kathryn Bigelow, the Samuel Bayer directed remake centers on a young man who reluctantly joins a traveling "family" of evil vampires after the girl he tried to seduce bites him and turns him into one.
Received the sides/casting breakdown today for the role of our hero, Caleb, played in the original by Adrian Pasdar, and the character is written pretty similar to the guy in the first film – albeit, a little more reckless and more of a ‘take charge’ guy.
In this, Caleb is an out-and-out 19-year-old party boy, living with his father and 10-year-old sister. He and his father are at odds – especially when a 40-something year old woman emerges from Caleb’s bedroom. But Caleb’s about to get a nice wake-up call…
He meets Mae, the charming stranger who makes him a member of her vampire gang, at a pinball parlour (she’s playing a game, he walks up behind her, places a coin on the machine and says ‘I’m next’ – distracting her, and causing her to lose the game. She ain’t too happy for a few seconds). They challenge each other to a game of pinball – winner buys the drinks – and that’s essentially how they hook up.
I’d be interested to see where they go with the remake… it does sound to be swimming in its own pool….
Agreed, Mr. Negative. They're just making him more unlikeable.
A 19 year old "party boy"? How very original.
