By: Tex Massacre

American Silent Horror Collection (THE CAT AND THE CANARY, DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE, KINGDOM OF SHADOWS, THE MAN WHO LAUGHS, THE PENALTY; 5-disc rerelease): Kino

4 Horror Gems from the silent era plus an original documentary. THE MAN WHO LAUGHS (1928) - Paul Leni's adaptation of Victor Hugo's classic novel tells the story of Gwynplaine, a tortured man with a permanent smile carved on his face. DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE (1920) - This first great American horror film follows the transformation of a prominent London physician, Dr. Jeckyll, into the murderous Mr. Hyde while he explores the dual nature of man. THE PENALTY (1920) - In one of his most diabolical roles, Lon Chaney stars as a criminal mastermind who carries out a gruesome vengeance upon the doctor who amputated his legs. THE CAT AND THE CANARY (1927) - A decaying mansion and a stormy night are the archetypal setting for mystery and chaos when a pack of greedy relatives gather for the reading of a twenty-year-old will. But before the West fortune can be handed down, the family must endure a night in the cavernous manor. KINGDOM OF SHADOWS (1998) - The horror film, from the turn of the century to the end of the silent era, is explored in this haunting, sometimes shocking documentary—a danse macabre of religion, carnivals, sex, nightmares, monstrosity, and death.

This is very nearly my Pick of the Week since all of you—who call yourselves horror fans—should own these films.

Black Sheep (review): Dimension Extreme/Genius

On a quiet New Zealand ranch, a genetic experiment has gone horribly wrong, transforming a docile flock of sheep into killers hungry for human blood. Those they bite become ravenous were-sheep. As the body count rises, a desperate handful of outnumbered survivors take a last stand against the ovine onslaught. Who will live, and who will be the next victim of the vicious killer sheep?

A freaking-flocking-fest of krazy-kiwi-humor—this festival favorite definitely needs to be seen to be believed!

Blood Sisters/Blood Tease (Double Feature Set): Razor Digital

BLOOD SISTERS: A strange string of disappearances has Tracy's new college tense and paranoid. Her curious personality follows the blood trail right to the front door of one of the school's sororities. Tracy and her roommate, Melissa, go undercover to rush the sorority, where soon they discover that they've bitten off more than they can chew, as their new sorority sisters are blood thirsty vampires! BLOODY TEASE: A new gentleman’s club, the Fetish Jam has opened up in town. Ken, Sammy, and Martin can’t wait to check the place out. On arrival, they are greeted by Treasure, Monique, and Serena, three beautiful young women on the prowl for young meat. Little does Ken and his friends know that these girls are more deadly than they are good looking. Before they know it, they are fighting for their lives, deciding between the feelings they’ve developed for these women, and the deadly lifestyles that are hidden in the darkness of the club.

The Curse of la Llorona: SRS Cinema

After trying to kill herself, Hana is cared for by her aunt and uncle who come to stay with her. The problem is not in Hana's head but in her house, which is haunted by the vengeful spirit of La Llorona. Now, the family must look into the past to figure out what the spirit wants and how its bloody terror can be stopped.

Deadwood Park: Cinema Epoch

The small community of Eidolon Crossing once boasted a flourishing economy and great prosperity, fueled by Dogwood Park, an amusement park at the edge of town. Then the child murders began. Jake and his parents moved away from Eidolon Crossing shortly thereafter. Now an adult, Jake is drawn back to Eidolon Crossing, the town where his brother was taken from him.

The latest film from Eric Stanze (SAVAGE HARVEST) at the Wicked Pixel Cinema crew is—as always—not to be missed.

Don’t Open Till Christmas: Telavista

A killer is on the loose in London and his sights are set on one target - Santa Claus - dozens of them. Jolly old Saint Nick is stabbed, beaten and electrocuted in department stores, at parties and even on crowded street corners. What sort of twisted mind is behind these barbarous acts of violence? Scotland Yard is on the trail but every clue points them in a different direction. The culprit is right under their nose, but will they come to this conclusion in time?

Caroline Munro (MANIAC) makes a quickie appearance in this anti-holiday classic of 80’s slasher cheese.

Dracula’s Dirty Daughter: Secret Key

Her name is Vamparina, the darkly sensual daughter of Count Dracula and a seducer of beautiful young women. For generations she has searched for the reincarnated soul of the vampire hunter who killed her father. Now she has found it...in the body of a college student. Planning to seduce then destroy him in order to avenge her father, Vamparina does not know that John’s gorgeous sister has discovered her true identity.

Title of the week goes too…

Evil in the Bayou/The Bagman (Double Feature Set): Razor Digital

EVIL IN THE BAYOU: Jake Le'Claire has led a miserable existence as a PI since being kicked off the New Orleans Police force. Hired to find a missing wife, Jake fights to avoid becoming the ultimate sacrifice in a battle between voodoo and satanic worship. THE BAGMAN:At fifteen years age, Jack Marshall's house burned to the ground, leaving him with disfiguring scars and both parents dead. Cruely teased and tormented by his peers, he was savagely murdered at the age of 17 by one of his classmates. Ten years later, the classmates reunite but, one by one, they disappear... is Jack Marshall really dead?

Evil Unleashed/Zombie Chronicles (Double Feature Set): Razor Digital

EVIL UNLEASHED: History tells us that, back in ancient Egypt, Princess Nefertesia took her own life in an attempt to live forever under the evil god, Aman. Nefertesia was buried and never heard from again... Until Now! When an ancient burial ground is disturbed, evil is unleashed into the present day life of Dave, Rick, Lisa and Tanya, four high school teenagers. The curse of Nefertesia haunts our teenage friends, going on a deadly killing spree. Seductively seducing her prey, Nefertesia cannot be stopped. Dave, Rick, Lisa and Tanya have their work cut out for them as they try to stop the curse before losing their lives. ZOMBIE CHRONICLES: Tara Woodley is a reporter looking to do a story on the famous ghost legends of an old desert town. But she can't seem to find the place until she picks up a strange hitchhiker, Ebenezer Jackson, who tells her he knows the way. Ebenezer proceeds to lead the skeptical Tara on a journey... one involving a variety of characters like the Army Sergeant whose vicious cruelty kills a recruit and the three hapless campers who bumble into an old, cursed outlaw cemetery. All these folks have one thing in common -- THEY'RE DEAD! Thanks to some very angry zombies!

Eyes of the Werewolf/V Word—The Matrix (Double Feature Set): Razor Digital

EYES OF THE WEREWOLF: A laboratory accident leaves Rich blind and at the mercy of an unscrupulous surgeon who performs an accidental eye transplant. V-WORD—THE MATRIX: Two friends take a cyber vacation to experience a world where they can act out their most violent and erotic fantasies. They soon realize they've entered a virtual free-for-all. Forbidden fantasies and desires suddenly appear in the form of the even deadlier "Dark Woman". All the players now end up in a cyber battle for their lives, and sanity, against a beautiful virtual hunter who has one killer fixation - winning the deadly game they started!

The Fly (1986; Blu-ray): Fox

See all of Jeff Goldblum’s parts melt off in dazzling high-defination!

Fox Horror Classics Collection (HANGOVER SQUARE, THE LODGER, THE UNDYING MONSTER; 3-disc set): Fox

HANOVER SQUARE (1945)— Struggling composer George Harvey Bone falls for Netta, a scheming dance hall singer who wants to steal his newest song. When he discovers her selfish motives, Bone flies into a rage and kills her in this classic thriller. But Bone has no memory of the crime: So dedicated is he to his craft that discordant sounds make him black out, and he doesn't realize that he's capable of such monstrous violence. THE LODGER (1944)—Though well-aware of the Jack the Ripper slayings, Robert and Ellen Burton take in a lodger to make ends meet. But as the actions of their mysterious boarder grow increasingly suspicious, the couple wonders if they've opened their home to a killer. THE UNDYING MONSTER (1942)—A scream rings out, and the residents of Hammond Hall race outside to discover the lord of the manor badly beaten and a villager fatally injured. When rumors of a werewolf family curse surface, the Hammond siblings wonder who among them will be next.

From Hell (Blu-ray): Fox

The Hughes Brothers Jack the Ripper graphic novel adaptation arrives this week in Blu-ray.

Ghost School Trilogy (MEMENTO MORI, WHISPERING CORRIDORS, WISHING STAIRS; 4-disc): Tartan

MOMENTO MORI (1999)—When high school girl Min-ah finds a strange, eerie diary kept by her two senior classmates, she begins to immerse in the diary's secrets. But after one of the girls committed suicide, Min-ah realizes that she is being possessed by the dead girl's spirit. WHISPERING CORRIDORS (1998)—This groundbreaking Korean film stars Kang-hie Choi as an intrepid teacher at an all-girls school whose prying ways are awarded with a murder-mystery she now must unravel. After a handful of students begin to turn up dead, administrators scramble to cover up the deaths and pass them off as suicides, a betrayal that spurs Se-yeon to action. But, like the proverbial cat, the curious educator may be marked for death. WISHING STAIRS (2003)—Teenage jealousy rears its ugly head in this high school horror tale. All the students know the legend about the 28-step staircase located in the girls' dormitory: If each step is counted aloud, the staircase will reveal a 29th step, and a wish is granted. But when one student dies mysteriously and others begin acting possessed, it becomes clear that the staircase is being used for evil.

Gory Gory Hallelujah: Indican

Four actors (a Black revolutionary, a bisexual hippie, a neurotic Jewish guy and a woman with sexual issues) audition for the role of Jesus. When they are all rejected, they hit the road on motorcycles to find on-stage glory in New York City. A fateful roadhouse run-in with a gang of Elvises strands the unlikely quartet in the town of Jackville. But the locals don't take kindly to blasphemers, alternative lifestyle choices, people of color—or anything else for that matter. Will our would-be saviors fall prey to evil small-town conspirators, flesh-eating zombies, or save the world from the Apocalypse?

The set-up sounds like a bad-barroom-joke, but the films does sound fun as hell.

Hallowed Ground (review): Genius

After she becomes stranded in a small town, a young woman discovers her arrival there was foretold a century earlier by the town's founding preacher and that she is an integral part of his impending - and terrifying - rebirth

Scarecrows and children of the corn, broken down cars and evil cults—It’s cliché city in small town America. Still HALLOWED GROUND is worth a look if for nothing else than sexy starlet Jamie Alexander (REST STOP).

Heartland Horrors: Season One: Elite

1981. Deep in the heartland of America, a small town is changed forever when a young surgeon makes a discovery that never should have been found. The once bustling lake town of Shadow Falls is driven into obscurity as the horrific events of the next few years drive away any resident lucky enough to be left alive.

Eleven, Season One shorts, are included on this DVD release. The short productions have been seen at such film festivals as the New York City Horror Film Festival and the Kansas International Film Festival.

Holla: Lionsgate

In this campy urban slasher flick, a weekend getaway at a secluded mountain estate turns into a night of terror for sitcom star Monica St. John her boyfriend, Dwayne and a handful of their cohorts. The gang is all set to celebrate after Dwayne pops the question, but their fun is short-circuited when a thunderstorm knocks out the power -- and a murderous psycho begins to knock off the vacationers.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame: Ultimate Edition: Image

Lon Chaney stars as the gentle outcast Quasimodo in the first film version of Victor Hugo's classic novel, The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Paris of 1482 was meticulously recreated on the back lot of Universal Studios for this powerful drama that turned Chaney into a screen legend—now presented in the ultimate special edition of this timeless classic.

Obviously you need this disc to accompany your purchase of the American Silent Horror Collection that Kino is putting out today.

The Lair: First Season (2-disc set): Genius

At an exclusive sex club called The Lair, vampires lure gay men with a promise of pleasure, only to kill them with blood-sucking pain. When bodies start piling up, a reporter threatens to uncover the secret, dismaying the club's lusty head vampire.

Night of the Living Dead 3-D (2-D Version also available): Lionsgate

In Jeff Broadstreet's remake of George Romero's classic zombie flick, the campaign of terror begins when funeral attendees Barb and Johnny arrive at a cemetery and are promptly attacked by a bloodthirsty mob of the undead. It's a carnival of carnage, complete with steamy sex scenes and campy comedy. Master of creepiness Sid Haig adds to the horror in his role as the deranged mortician.

This one comes in a nifty 2-D and 3-D version. The 3-D edition has 4-pairs of Blue/Red 3-D glasses for your viewing enjoyment. The 2-D version only offers the same terrible movie…sans the gimmick.

Poltergeist: 25th Anniversary Edition: Warner

Life is very pleasant for the close-knit Freeling family until a host of otherworldly forces invades their peaceful suburban home. Before long, their house is transformed into a swirling supernatural sideshow -- all centered on their angelic young daughter, Carol Anne.

It’s here a special edition that still manages to NOT include a documentary about the two most interesting facets of the film—Who really directed it and how come everybody who was in it is dead? Oh well…the clown still scares the shit outta me!

Raiders of the Damned: Image

Their bodies are rotting corpses, but their minds are still hideously alive! In the final days of World War III, an unleashed biochemical weapon rendered Earth a post-apocalyptic wasteland overrun by cannibalistic zombies. When a helicopter carrying a group of scientists—humanity's last hope for survival—crashes in zombie central, a military ops team led by Dr. is dispatched to rescue them. Now it's up to the only soldiers still alive to fight the bloodthirsty zombies for control of the planet - or die trying!

The Redsin Tower: Toetag Pictures

Nothing seems to be going Kim's way. After recently being dumped, her heartbroken ex-boyfriend has become obsessed with trying to win back her love. Now the party she was supposed to attend with her best friend just got raided. After teaming up with four friends who are not ready to call it a night, the group decides to continue the festivities at the sight of the town's most notorious urban legend. With the ex-boyfriend seeking vengeance on Kim, and anyone else that gets in his way, the group of friends make the wrong choice when they decide to party at THE REDSIN TOWER.

The latest and greatest from the gang that brought you AUGUST UNDERGROUND. Come on…I know some of you own that!

Rise: Blood Hunter (review): Sony Pictures

Reporter Sadie Blake awakens to find herself in a morgue, transformed into a member of the undead by a vicious vampire cult. With the help of cop Clyde Rawlins (Michael Chiklis, who lost his daughter to the same sect, Sadie undertakes a mission of revenge against those who took away her life.

Does anyone one even remembers this Lucy Liu films theatrical release? Whatever…metal fans, keep your eyes peeled for Marilyn Manson as the flicks bartender!

See Jane Run: Cinema Epoch

A horror film about psychological instability, religion, suburbia and good old Texas BBQs. In the same vein as classic movies from the 1970s, this film begins with four teenagers in a car picking up a hitchhiker. When the advice of a local auto mechanic turns deadly, the travelers find themselves trapped in a warped version of the American dream from which only a disturbed mind can escape.

Splatter Beach: Camp Motion Pictures

Something ancient lurks in the surf off Sea Bright Beach. It swims silently, walks upright and breathes air. It's also very, very hungry…and not for seafood anymore. Tonya, Rodney and Rupert are out-of-towners joining a crowd of young people gathered on the beach for an all-weekend music festival. Even after several townspeople are torn apart and devoured by the humanoid creatures, the partygoers remain oblivious to the horror that has risen up from the sea.

Alright fanboys…Erin Brown (the former Misty Mundae) is back! Check it out.

Tales from the Grave/Tales from the Grave 2 (Double Feature Set): Razor Digital

Be careful what you wish for…or you could become a Tale From the Grave! The Old Crone stares deeper and deeper into her crystal ball to tell four bone chilling tales guaranteed to keep you awake. There is NO escape from terror when you mess with Crazy Gunderman. The Wrath of Hercaylac will take your soul. Two scientists perform unthinkable experiments in Lab Rats and in an experiment gone awry, a half-man, half goat roams the countryside in search of prey in The Billywack.

28 Days Later/28 Weeks Later (2-disc set): Fox

Double up on all the rage you can handle and pick up both films in one convenient set.

28 Weeks Later (review): Fox (TEX’S PICK OF THE WEEK)

Six months after the rage virus was inflicted on the population of the British Isles, the US Army helps to secure a small area of London for the survivors to repopulate and start again. But not everything goes to plan.

If possible, “Weeks” is even better than “Days”. Just my opinion though and we all know what they say about opinions…

Twilight Zone—The Movie: Warner

Four horror/sci-fi segments directed by four famous directors which are their own versions of classic stories from Rod Serling's landmark television series.

Within the Woods/Mutation (Double Feature Set): Razor Digital

WITHIN THE WOODS: A new reality show invites five brave souls to spend the night at Camp Blood, where over a dozen people were murdered by the infamous Clown years ago. Whoever remains at the end of twenty-four hours will split a million dollars. To drive away the contestants, the producers have rigged several "scares" as well as hiring a stuntman dressed as the Clown. But as night falls, screams of terror fill the desolate woods as a real bloodthirsty killer begins cutting down the competition, one by one. Is the legendary Clown back, or is one of the group willing to kill for the prize? MUTATION: Bone-crunching martial arts combine with heart-pounding horror in this intense sci-fi thriller. “K” was the most infamous serial killer of his day, torturing and murdering dozens of innocent victims. Until Detective Steve Gornick tracked the maniac down and destroyed him. Years later, a brilliant young scientist injects K’s corpse with an experimental serum, bringing the killer back to life and giving him superhuman strength and speed. As K cuts a bloody path through Los Angeles, he begins to mutate into an unstoppable force of evil. Even the detective who once put him down may not be able to destroy the monstrous MUTATION.

Wrong Turn 2—Dead End )review) Fox

A survival reality show goes terribly wrong when the contestants accidentally stumble upon a clan of mutant hayseed cannibals eager to make a feast of the young TV stars who've ventured onto the flesheaters' woodland turf. As the players begin to vanish, the survivors struggle to find their way out of the remote West Virginia forest before they become the next meal.

Wrong Turn/Wrong Turn 2 (2-disc set): Fox

Need ‘em both…a double dose of depraved cannibalistic cinema—served up screaming just for you.
