Its impossible to necessarily say who "best" is.

So they bring back the 10 Best Picture nominee thing 3 years back...but now have only nominated 9 films the past few years in a row. I would have liked to see "The Hobbit" or "The Impossible" make the list this year.

I hate their logic for having so many Best Picture nominations which is to garner more viewers. Best Picture isn't announced until the end of the show....that is when people tune in. You need to cut some of the musical numbers and all these long intros to stuff.

This is incorrect.

Last year they DID cut the music numbers.

And they have gone back up to 9 or 10 because when the Academy Awards began (especially in the mid 30s to late 1940s) that's how many nominees there were for Best Picture. Having 9 or 10 allows for a wider variety of films to be honored. Remember, even a nomination is quite the honor.

despite (lincoln) and (life of pi) dominating the nominations, i think it will still be pretty spread out with the winners. both of these films will only win 3 or 4 categories.

After the Golden Globes tonight, we now have some surprising frontrunners. "Argo" is in the lead for Best Picture at the moment and Christoph Waltz may be winning his 2nd Supporting Actor trophy next month.

I can see the Academy going for a more EPIC film again for Best Picture, so I think it will be between "Lincoln" and "Les Miserables", with "Argo" as a possible spoiler to those films.

I'm still pretty pissed Affleck was snubbed for Director, and I think the Academy are probably feeling a little stupid right now after tonight's turn out at the Globes.

Whatever happens, all the movies, performances and whatnot are very strong this year so I don't think it's going to feel like a total crime whatever takes the reign. Personal preference would rather it not be Zero Dark Thirty, though. The movie that is the weakest of the bunch, IMO.

Yeah Affleck missing from the Director category is worth a laugh.

Congrats to him winning last night! He looked genuinely surprised.

Yeah, I really couldn't have called that. I'm pretty certain he'll take the Oscar now, too. I thought he was out of the race entirely but this has mixed things up greatly. The only competition I think he might have in the Screenplay category is Zero Dark Thirty, but remember a couple of years ago when Mark Boal took the trophy that was rightfully Tarantino's? Yeah, that's not gonna happen again.
