This flick is a masterpiece.
I caught it at TIFF this week and was completely blown away. JK Simmonds and Miles Teller were fantastic, but Teller is something special, a performance that has to be seen to be believed.
The impressive balance between the technical brilliance of it's manic Jazz-like cutting, fantastic sound design and energetic camera work - some sequences reminiscent of Goodfellas era Scorsese - and the subtly and quiet depiction of a father/son relationship is handled brilliantly by first time feature director, Damien Chazelle.
Not sure what type of release this will get, but it's worth the effort to seek it out. The audience erupted in a standing-o the second it ended. I can't think of a theatre-going experience like it. In a fair and just world, it would receive Oscar nods across the board. If I didn't see another flick at the fest this year, I'd be satisfied.
Whiplash is without a doubt at the top of my list this year.
