But how the hell are you going make an Oz film without Dorothy? That's like making Alice in Wonderland without Alice. |

Reminds me too much of Burton's Alice in Wonderland.

That's what I thought too when viewing the trailer plus I'm not a big fan of Franco but I'll wind up seeing it eventually on dvd most likely

I've read a number of very positive reviews. The comparisons with Alice in Wonderland (Burtons) seem to be kind of off balance (according to these reviews) as this is much more in tune with the original Wizard of Oz.
I have the afternoon off of work tomorrow and I'm gonna go check this out... I'll let you all know what I think! edit my favorite critics gave this an extremely enthusiastic review... I'm pretty surprised. http://my.spill.com/profiles/blogs/o...l-audio-review

The reviews have been surprising because it does look a lot like Alice In Wonderland, and that was pretty crappy.
A friend wants to go see this and the more I see the TV spots I'm kind of warming up to it.

Just got back! I enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would...
First things first, the things I didn't like. Mila Kunis was badly miscast, she doesn't really do a very good job with the material she is given... and her character is really important. I love what they do with the character, but she wasn't convincing at all. Also, the movie is VERY family friendly, so a lot of the humor didn't do it for me. Lots of jokes for kids, but plenty of funny scenes that should work for most people. If you hate CGI, just don't watch this. We all know what you'll think. It was visually incredible (I saw it in 3D as well, which was neat)... Extremely inventive and colorful with plenty of jaw dropping effects. Alright, well everything else was actually outstanding. The movie is actually kind of campy and the acting is hammed way way up, which makes it feel much more like the original Wizard of Oz. I wasn't sure what Raimi was getting at with the acting at first, but about 10 minutes in I found myself really enjoying everything. Its an emotionally simple movie and all the actors play a lot "bigger" than they normally would... Like I said, somewhat campy but it worked. This is NOT a dark fantasy movie by any means, its a big, showy, family friendly fantasy movie full of positive emotions. As if we should have expected anything else.... This is a prequel to Wizard of Oz, after all. When Oscar (Oz) first got to Oz, the movie was kind of falling flat for me, but it picks up after a short time. I think it had to do with Mila Kunis... she just didn't do a very good job in this movie. The last 15 minutes were easily the best part... really exciting and explosive. I respect that instead of showing all of the same shit we saw in the original (like.. WOW YOU SEE THIS?!?! THIS IS OZ REMEMBER THIS??) it was very restrained in referencing the original and introduces more new characters and areas of Oz we haven't seen before. All of the references are a lot of fun... I think they really actually set this up as a prequel very well. This isn't a masterpiece by any means, but it was a blast and most definitely shouldn't be compared to Alice in Wonderland... This movie actually has some heart and soul. 8.5/10

Skipping this in theaters most likely. The only 2D showings are at noon and I'm just not up to going to the cinema that early anymore.

I read the original novel a few months ago and really enjoyed it. From the trailer for the prequel, it seems a lot of characters and references excluded from the 1939 movie are included here. I.E. The porcelain figurines.
