When Carpenter was on his game, he was unstoppable. Argento had style but couldn't write his way out of a paper bag. Fulci was a tad on the nose. Hooper was a flash in the pan. Craven had some clever ideas but lacked style. Gordon was very promising but didn't get the killer script to cataplut him into the big time. Romero has been riding his one-trick pony far too long.

The up-and-comers (Gunn, Wan, Roth, Aja, etc.) show more directorial promise than that bunch. If only they had more FRESH scripts and ideas...

Music Of The Heart, anyone?
People Under The Stairs could be so much more effective. It's fun, but if you lost the comedic overtones and worked more on the dark aspects. It could be chilling.

I don't think Craven is ashamed of Horror at all. I've seen him say how much he loves it countless times.

I love all of them minus Hooper,Argento and Craven.

Argento is hit and miss. He hasn't made a great movie in my eyes. The early ones look good and are enjoyable but nothing I'd consider great.

Someone mentioned that Craven seems embarrassed of horror movies and if he could have made a go at other genres he would have. That's spot on and I feel the same way about Hooper. Outside of the two TCM movies, The Mangler and Poltergeist, I don't care for much he's done. Salem's Lot was good I guess and I haven't seen Eaten Alive yet so maybe that is another one I might like.

I love Romero, Gordon and Carpenter equally. I might favor Carpenter a little more over the other two but they're all pretty close in my book. I find Gordon to be underrated. Most people have no idea who he is until you mention some of the movies he's done.

Oh yeah, I forgot about 'Salem's Lot', that's also a good one. I don't remember 'Eaten Alive' too well, I'll have to see it again sometime.

No contest at all. Argento all the way. people whine that the scripts he do aren't realistic but they don't get it. Argento isn't filming your pat little hollywood horror bs..he's filming movies as actual nightmares.

Suspiria is and well be a classic for years to come. Phenomena is an amazing film. Deep red pretty much was the peak of Giallo. The only giallo that came close to Deep Red was Martino's Torso.

it wasn't just his early stuff that worked either. dario argento's Opera is rightfully a classic. Stendahl Syndrome was incredible.

he has steered off in a couple films but mostly because he tried to cater to the spoon fed who said his films should be more commercial yet complain that his new films aren't as good as the old ones.

Sleepless was a damn good giallo...

Whew sorry had to rant. I am so tired of people not getting Argento's work.

I respect and understand all that you said but at the end of the day, I still don't overly enjoy his movies. I do like the nightmare aspect of his films like you mentioned though. He's definitely a director in his own league.

Argento is easily the most visually talented of the directors listed.

I guess that goes without saying, though.

Carpenter for me, easily.

The rest would go...

Romero
Argento
Fulci
Gordon
Craven
Hooper
