I don't get the detractors. What's their argument? He was terrible in films like "What's Eating Gilbert Grape", The Basketball Diaries", & "The Aviator"?

It's the same deal with Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise. It's basically because they're pretty boys. I've never really heard any solid criticisms of their level of talent. It always boils down to "I just don't like him okay!", or "Dicaprio? What are you, gay?"

There are plenty of actors who don't constantly mug for the camera and get annoying. Yet they aren't paid so much. Actors like Dicaprio are mainly there to sell tickets, yet occasionally a good director can get a performance out of them. Happens rarely, though, and as I said, there are literally hundreds of better actors out there.

I'd rather watch Lee Van Cleef or Eli Wallach.
