Ah, I remember well when I first saw Verbinski's "The Ring": during the scene where the dead girl's mother explains how she found her (and you see a flash of the closet being opened), I got such a scare I literally jumped out of the sofa.

When I saw that the Japanese original with its prequel and sequels had been released as a DVD box set, my fandom was such that I instantly bought a DVD player. For me, seeing "Ring 0" alone was worth the acquisition of both.

This movie, probably more than any other one, got me hooked as a life-long horror fan. I don't know if I'd put it in my top ten now, but it'll always have a special place in my heart.

The Ring, much like last year's Let Me In, is an excellent example of taking a foreign property and translating it perfectly into another culture. Fantastic movie and I definitely prefer it to Ringu, partly because it's easier to connect with a world closer to my own.
