I decided to see what were the ups and downs of different countries version of a horror movie. We'll start from the original.
Ringu The Japanese version of the Ring and the original also based on a book. I already saw The Ring first before seeing this and I've come to acknowledge the fact that people tend to say " Oh, the Japanese version is way better" " It's so better" I found The Ring to be very unique in it's own way so I decided not to jump the bandwagon and say " it's so better" without looking at it first. Let's check it out! Ringu's first scare doesn't really convince me, but I already saw The Ring so it was a downer in that sense, the screen just fades to black and white at the moment of the Medusa stare, no spooky lead ins or time taken to creep the audience out. There was nothing very spooky ,just creepy and questionable. The movie enters into the story pretty sloppy, everything seems a bit hurried and you're not feeling anything of interest. I guess if I saw Ringu first then I wouldn't be saying this. The acting is very refrained Japanese...like the soft spoken Japanese woman, I can't stand that low voice Japanese speak...it urks me. I like clear and to the point, Japanese can be a tough sounding language. I think acting schools there keep the actresses and actors in this posture element; like they have specific ways of emotions for scenes that everyone must abide too. If it's scary then act this way, if you're worried then act this way. It follows the same format. This is not true with all Japanese movies but it tends to be the case in some films; like this one, I believe. I just don't think people talk and act like that in real life or situations...it has to have a spontaneous element...it is what it is, I guess. The spookiness quality had it's little capabilities and the visuals aren't as effective. The cinematography most of the time reminds me of an older movie rather than a horror movie. Some scenes try to establish some ghostly spookiness. I like Ringu's story. It explains the situation of the little girl much better and why she is who she is. It gives one a more comfortable feeling of figuring the situation out, where I don't think the U.S version does. All in all, Ringu is not bad and worth checking out, especially if you have already seen the U.S version. I don't think it matters which one you check out first. The Ring, The U.S version of Ringu to me was a very ghostly appealing movie, the cinematography was eerie all around, the rain scenes, the ocean, the loud string music, the fields, the cabin scene with the light shining the red color of the tree coming into the room...excellent spooky feel for a movie. The beginning leads us in the right timing and doesn't really stray one's attention or at least not mine. The little ghostly situations always happening makes one feel uneasy...it's great! The acting is good and almost every character makes an impression in one's mind. The story of the little girl is where it starts to make you wonder what's going on and why, it doesn't explain why ? It just is...which didn't make any sense to viewers...Ringu explains why the little girl is who she is. I remember when this came out in the theater, my friends went to see it and were talking about it saying " I mean, why did she have all those powers ? " You have to see Ringu for the reasoning behind that...here it's just being mad or maybe it's like an exorcist type feeling. I didn't like that aspect...it was weird and left one without reason. They say samarra's rage here in The Ring, but yeah I guess...only in Ringu it explains who the mother was and her interest and fascination with the unknown and spirit realm...starring out into the depths of her mind calling attention to the strange mysticism of existing things beyond other dimensions. Japan has a history of things like that so it's not uncommon for the story to go that way...I don't know if the U.S version wanted to follow it all the way so they kept their reasoning like the bad seed or the not natural born kid...which is fine I guess but I believe doesn't explain much. Bad seeds have reason for being born and Ringu explained that more than The RIng. The RIng all together is a spooky movie and I recommend it for the quality of the ghostly haunting effects of the cinematography...also the eerie feel all around. It's a good movie. I don't think I'll depreciate either amongst one another, one gives where the other one doesn't so I'll put them in a slightly parallel ground of a balance beam rating. The higher goes to the The Ring for it's haunting and eerie feeling. It usually leaves me pondering the wind sounds, or what lurks in the unknown feelings of fright. It's a movie I can watch many times for the cinematography alone. Next I'll share my thoughts about Ringu 2 and The RIng 2 |

I love them both and believe the Ring is definitely one of the better remakes. It's got some real visually appealing scenes and is very creepy as well and Watts is great in it as well.Verbinski did a great job

I liked the American one more. I am from New York, so maybe I just enjoy the one that centers around the familiar American culture.
The Ring had a distinct visual style. It is achieved by making sure that practically all of the sets are constructed using loosely the same color scheme, the dark, washed out blues and greens. Sleepy Hollow accomplished the same type of effect. I like movies that do this, its pleasing on the eyes and clearly requires precision planning. I only watched Ringu once, thought it was decent. I had already seen The Ring though, and they say first impressions are the most important. |

If you're gonna do a rudimentary analysis of the series, you should probably include Ring Virus with Ringu and Ring, and if you're doing the sequels, Rasen should be included.

I liked both Ringu and The Ring equally, both great films. One of the few movies that can actually scare me and keep me up all night.
