Can you believe NIN sang "Hurt" first? That always blows my mind. I wonder if Reznor was pissed or complimented by John's desire to record his song?

I've read that when Reznor first heard about Johnny covering his song, he was kinda pissed. It wasn't until he actually heard Johnny's version that he sat back and realized that Cash meant every word just as much as he did.

Really? That's awesome that he liked it. To be honest, I heard the Cash version long before I heard the NIN version. I wonder which one is more universally popular?

I also heard that the Beastie Boys were pissed when Cancer Bats wanted to record their own version of "Sabatoge". I wonder if that ever blew over?

Now:

Still silly.

The same goes for me. I wasn't aware that it was a cover until I read something about it. But my guess would be, considering there are far more people aware of Cash than NIN, that Cash's version is more universally popular. While I am a big fan of NIN, Johnny's music speaks to people of all walks of life.

But as far as the Beastie Boys and Cancer Bats are concerned, I honestly have no idea.

I think if you're a big Johnny Cash fan, you know that he does a lot of covers, especially in his last 4 or 5 albums. (He also covered Bruce Springsteen, Frank Sinatra, Gordon Lightfoot, etc.) I was surprised when I heard how many people DIDN'T know that "Hurt" was a cover.

"Cloak & Dagger" The Asteroids Galaxy Tour

I love The Asteroids Galaxy Tour

But yeah most of his later stuff was definitely covers, especially the last album he put out before he died. But when that album came out I was like 12 or 13, so I wasn't even aware of NIN at the time, and I didn't find out about it until a couple of years later.
