Killing Them Softly - 8.5/10

Despite a few meandering/slow/pointless moments this film was a knock out. Works as an analogy for the state of US politics and as a crime thriller. Brad Pitt is extremely badass and the violence in this film was visceral. Like I said, some of the scenes seemed to go on for a bit long and I had a hard time fitting that into some of the overall themes, but the style and brilliance of many scenes allows me to forgive that. Awesome shit, the last 5 minutes have some of my favorite dialogue.

I need to see this. I just don't get to the theater these days, and last I checked it wasn't leaked yet. Sounds awesome though.

The Collection -- 5.5/10; Very disappointing. Its editing was very distracting. I did the ol' one one-thousand, two one-thousand bit, and most shots barely made it past one before the cut. So, if you love quick cuts, you'll love this. Dunstan has a decent eye and loves to slop on the gore, but he needs to find a decent editor. If he demanded the music-vid editing, he ought to stick to writing trash.

The Snowtown Murders - This is the most disturbing movie I've seen in recent memory. I have a pretty thick skin when it comes to movies, but this one stuck with me, and I'm still dealing with the after effects. The film is about Austrailia's most prolific serial killer, John Bunting. I'd be hard pressed to find a more polarizing performance, than the guy who played Bunting. The supporting cast is just as convincing, as well. It's one of those movies, that if it wasn't for obvious film techniques, you would think it was real.

I definately recommend it, but be warned, it's not an easy watch. It's not some exploitation flick, like The Human Centipede, where you can turn your moral compass off and enjoy it for what it is. This shit really happened, and the film invites you to be a voyeur to it all. Have your Chappelle Show DVD's ready, because after you see this, you will need a pallette cleanser.

Lincoln - 5/5

Not much to say really. Daniel Day-Lewis is superb. The rest of the acting is fantastic across the board (Tommy Lee Jones & Sally Field should get noms as well) Spielberg is restrained, and does a great job pacing the film. If you are even remotely interested in the subject matter it is a must see. Want to go back a watch it again.

Snowtown is very well shot, very cinematic, and does not at all look like an amateur production.

Filmmaking in Australia usually tends to be of very high quality, even though they don't have the budgets of hollywood.

Well, I'm no film scholar, but everything is as it should be. The cinematography fits the mood to a tee. The sound editing is what you'd expect. The score compliments the mood, and works very well. The lighting is appropriate. The wardrobe is, again, appropriate. The narrative is a little confusing, but nothing a documentary of the actual events, couldn't help you put all the pieces together with.

If I were to compare it to anything, it would be like a Larry Clarke film, with the class of Winter's Bone. It's raw, but not without purpose.
