The Blob (1958) - BLOODY-DISGUSTING

I've considered putting this in the Steve McQueen thread but I figured it's more about the movie itself. It's always been one of my favorite films.
You already know the deal: A bunch of Pennsylvania teens fight off a giant mass of intergalactic red jello. But maybe you didn't know:
1.) Steve McQueen was paid $3000.00 for this screen debut.
2.)The title track was composed by an uncredited Burt Bacharach("beware of the blob, he creeps..and leaps..") and was sung by a group called The Five Blobs.
3.)The movie ends with the screen flashing a very ambiguous "The End...?" And apparantly it wasn't, because in 1972 a sequel was released, "Beware! The Blob" directed by a post " I Dream of Jeannie"/ pre "Dallas" Larry Hagman. Re-released in 1982, it featured the tagline, "The film that J.R. shot!"

One of the better monster films of the 50's. Though honestly I like the 1988 remake better. Songs good too.

This is one time where i actually prefer the remake, which as a matter of fact, i just finished watching.

I actually never cared for the remake, even though one of the kills is really cool: the kid in the sewer tunnel who gets grabbed and pulled under, then pops up again half eaten

Makes you wonder how a remake would look using CGI

I remember this film quite vividly from my youth, and i always found the idea of the blog terrifying as a child. Haven't seen it in years, definitely worth a late night viewing one of these days.

I remember the remake was bad, with some pretty shocking effects when i was 10 years old. Stand out moments inculde when the blob hollows out that girl in the back seat of her boyfriends car, and then when it leaves her skin just crumples. Also the scene where the nurse(?) gets caught in the phone booth, and the blob pushes the decaying cop against the glass.

Oh and who could forget that girls preppy boyfriend, getting dropped on by it at the start of the movie. I remember being really suprised when that happened

I don't think it would look as good with CGI.

The effects in the remake were great for the late 80's and still hold up today. The practical make up and gore effects give the actors something to work off and make their reactions seem more real.

Hmmm...I don't think so. Actors in big budget CGI laden films work off tennis balls mounted on 2 x 4's nowadays. Nobody seems to think that their reactions are any less genuine.

Just my opinion, of course.
