Ridley Scott's Alien Prequel - Prometheus (2012)

I think Alien 3 (in its' assembly cut form) is a damn good movie. I think most people get hung up on three things.

1. The killing off of Newt and Hicks. 2 character that went through hell in the previous film, just to get killed in the crash at the beginning of Alien 3.

2. The bald Brits. I'll be the first to admit, it is tough keeping track of all of the characters because they all look very similar (save Charles S. Dutton for obvious reasons).

3. The model work. Alien 3 was made right on the edge of the CGI explosion. Most of the alien seen in the film is models. Some of these shots look dated or just out and out poor.

Assembly Cut is certainly much more visceral and dark take on it(it was like watching a brand new movie) - but in no fucking way is it an eyesore.

That's one of the things the film actually has going for it.

The dark, oppressive tone was great.

Wish more sequels would take that route.

It is a little weird that there were so many Brits on that prison planet.

Shoulda just called it "Space Australia".

Brits aren't a dealbreaker.

Never noticed. Most sci fi flicks (even the best) have at least some shoddy fx.

It's just something that comes with the genre.

But you forgot the all-important #4 (that should be #1)...

It's boring as fuck. And there's no story in it worth telling.

Just a bunch of nothing until...

#5...Ripley's melodramatic, silly ass slow-mo swan dive @ the end.

I honestly didn't care if she lived or died and it was no surprise at the time that they wanted to write Ripley out of the franchise, but did they have to make her go out in such a cheesily directed scene?

ALIEN 3 is a good film...BUT...it shits all over ALIENS.
There's a gloom that hangs over ALIENS that wasn't there before, that all of it was for nothing.
Seeing that ALIENS is a PERFECT sequel to ALIEN...it deserved a better sequel than it got.
In many ways it would just be better to say there's ALIEN and ALIENS and that's it.
Unless you're rooting for the aliens...then it's fun watching them totally ruin everyone's lives!
Sorry, but I'm on Ripley's side...even though an ALIEN film without the aliens would suck.

That source material was a far more exciting and interesting follow-up than 'Alien 3'. 'Aliens' set up so much great mythology, which could have been capitalized upon and make for one hell of a franchise! That three story arc did exactly what 'Alien 3' should have done; it was faithful to how the fans saw the direction of the series going in. Instead of turning in to the damp squid that 'Alien 3' made it!
