I didn't hate it, but it wasn't anything special. I'm sure if I saw it before I saw Ju On, I probably wouldn't have been so judgmental. I totally dug Ju On.

"The Grudge".... "There's a Japanese belief that when someone dies in a powerful grip of rage, then a curse is left behind. It's a "stain" that forever becomes a part of the place where the death occurred, and it will kill everything it touches". These statements set this movie for one jolting ghost tale!! Jump scenes rule the day here. This baby is stocked with jump scenes! Some people think jump scenes are cheap ploys to get a scare from the audience, but they're really well done in this movie. And they're manufactured frequently and shrewdly enough to keep you in a constant state of unease. Comparisons to "The Ring" are inevitable, so I'll just say that I personally feel "The Grudge" is the creepier of the two. This is a movie that's heavy on atmosphere and freaky imagery. The Japanese ghosts creeped me out and the eerie/unnerving sounds they make are freaky. The movie does a great job of keeping you guessing. You never really know where it's going, and since the story isn't linear you really have to pay attention. I think the back and forth story scenario's worked exceptionally well, but one of my complaints is that near the end everything is wrapped up and explained rather quickly. As a result, I wish the movie had been longer. A longer running time could've produced more in-depth character development, a more clever way to explain what was going on, and maybe even a better ending. Aside from that, this wonderful ghost story is filled with suspense, spooky atmosphere, solid ensemble acting, good makeup effects, and creepy imagery. I love it!!

I think it's better than The Ring (which I'm really not a fan of, at all) but I don't think this one is that good either. I feel that the scares doesn't work, and that it lacks some of the more subtle moments. The Japanese films are terrifying as all hell, and I think it's because they're more gritty than the polished remake, and that they have some subtle scares, like something appearing in the background.

Couldn't bring myself to watch it, sometimes, you've seen em' once, you've seen em' twice or thrice or too many times. I haven't seen it so I can't be too harsh. I actually find Sarah Michelle geller to be very attractive but still didn't bring me to watch it, that could be my reasoning for giving it a try. Well maybe, I already know what's going to be wrong with it, but that doesn't stop me from watching movies...wait, it totally does, Shit!
