Still scary and effective to this day, and a great ending.

Best story has to the the ventriloquist one starring Michael Redgrave.

This is one of the best horror films of the 40s.
Michael Redgrave's awesome performance is one of the best ever!
Great atmosphere, photography and actually SCARY!
I believe HG Wells wrote the comedy episode.
I'll check into it.

Saw this in a film class like a week before Halloween a few years ago. Some parts really creeped me out.

John V. Baines, Angus MacPhail and T.E.B. Clarke were the screenwriters for the film. The "Golfing Story" episode was simply based on an H.G. Wells story.

This is one of my favorite films of all time.

Well, that's what I meant!
I was digging the lesbianism out of THE HAUNTING...and now THIS film.
The Michael Redgrave story with Hugo the dummy....
Hugo: We're finished, Maxwell...
Maxwell: Hugo, we've been together so long! You can't leave me!
Hugo: Can't stop me, Maxwell.
Maxwell: Hugo, I won't let you!
Hugo: I've found another guy...much more interesting than you!
Maxwell: Don't leave me, Hugo!
Hugo: We're finished, Maxwell....FINISHED!!

These aren't exact quotes...but close enough!

Maxwell wakes to find Hugo gone. He goes to his rival-friend's place and there's Hugo...I think in the bed!
Maxwell shoots him!

This is so "gay" that I noticed it the first time I saw it when I was about 11!
It all only serves to make it all greater!
It's a "must-see"!

Horror anthologies hardly ever work since the episodic structure rarely allows for the convincing development of character and suspense. This is a rare and terrifically frightening exception - five tales wrapped in one eerie package and made by four top directors of the era, Alberto Cavalcanti ('Christmas Party' and 'The Ventriloquist's Dummy'), Charles Crichton ('Golfing Story'), Basil Dearden ('Hearse Driver', as well as the linking sections) and Robert Hamer ('The Haunted Mirror').

One of the finest products of the renowned Ealing studios. Each episode is an audacious piece of craftsmanship, and each one is devilishly entertaining.

I just read the story that "Golfing Story" was based on. It is by H.G. Wells, but it is called "The Inexperienced Ghost".

Yup, one of the earliest horror anthology and all stories delivered. A masterpiece of horror storytelling in every level. This one may very well be the best British Horror movie of all time.

10/10. Highly recommended.
