![]() With Morjana Alaoui, Mylène Jampanoï Midfielder 70's, somewhere in France, a child, Lucia, was found in a physical disaster. She had disappeared fourteen months earlier. The location of her sequestration appears to be a cold room of a disused slaughterhouse. No trace of sexual abuse. The reasons for his abduction remain mysterious. Fifteen years later, Lucia has an idea in mind: to find his tormentors and understand the reasons for his ordeal. Aided by Anna, a friend inseparable encountered in the children's hospital where they were placed since Lucia, who has his whole head, is believed to have regained his captors and decides to take revenge. Hi everybody ! I am French, and if there is a good film that could not stop talking there, now it is the horror film "Martyrs" by Pascal Laugier (Saint Ange, aka House of Voices in USA). A controversial, because it is the first film french to get a "R-Rated" (-18 years old are not allowed) for approximately 20 years (all horror films, American or foreign, are prohibited to under 16 generally) ... But the release in cinemas Is about to be cancelled because of the extreme violence of the movie. Last edited by Zito; 06-08-2008 at 11:33 PM. |

Other than the violence, it looks utterly weak. Even with the violence, it only looks mediocre.

I'm sure I'll give this a try when it comes out, but I hate when movies are marketed as the most controversial this or that. Who is the controversy with? Let us say it's controversial.
After the hubbub over Frontiers, I'm not as psyched about hearing how horrifying French movies are. |

From the BD main mage, review for Martyrs.
It begins with a whisper - then there's some buzz - then there's a friend who knows someone who knows someone else who has seen it. Word has it that the movie is awesome, and that is when it transforms into something more than just another horror flick, that it when it becomes a legend. Legend? This flick better be good... MARTYRS is this year's INSIDE, both films which are legendary in their own right. ...and it had better be more "legendary" than Inside could have ever dreamed to be. I'm sorry, but that flick was, as Dobe put it in reference to how Martyrs looks, "utterly mediocre." It took an entire 24 hours for the movie to sink in and really left a dent in this reviewer's psyche. After it was all said and done MARTYRS is really quite an exquisite experience - it's so incredibly rare when a horror film is so engaging that it can feel as if you're right there with the protagonist. The only negative thing about Laugier's film is that once you see it, you'll never be able to see it for the first time ever again... This is some serious praise. The only film to come out of France that recieved such high regard that lived up to it, IMO, was High Tension. But this part of the review gives me some hope. INSIDE is fun and literally is like a Disney movie in comparison to how tough MARTYRS is to watch. I am going to stay the hell away from ALL reviews, screenshots, clips, etc. until this one comes out. Maybe then, I'll be able to enjoy it without all the hype clouding my perception. Inside was, quite possibly, the most over-hyped horror film of all time, and I am tired of being let down.

That review makes no difference to me. I don't trust ANY reviews of french horror films from this site. The fanboyism over them is incredibly silly.
