While the 90's sucked for movies is was a great decade for tv. The X-Files is one of the top 5 shows of all-time & I doubt we'll see the likes of it again. There are so many things to love. Mulder & Scully are tv icons who have 1/100 type chemistry, each episode is like a mini-movie, Nutter's work is some of the best ever for tv, (right up there with badalementi's work on twin peaks) it has awesome villains, (namely csm & krychek) Horace Pinker, I could go on & on.
But what I love most about the show is its inherent elasticity in terms of storytelling. If serial killers yarns are your thing the X-Files has'em, if it's stand-alone episodes dealing with some of the coolest monsters ever the X-Files has'em, (those are my faves) if the paranormal is what floats your boat the X-Files has it, if terrorism subject matter is your thing the X-Files has it, if it's the occult, has that too, if it's a complex & compelling mythology storyline, yup, you guessed. Motherfucking X-Files has that too. It has everything in spades. Oh, like to laugh? When it wants to be the X-Files is hilarious. While I like every season, 1-5 is the X-Files in its prime. Season 4 (the best season) is just classic episode after classic episode. Shit, Sanguinarium is better than most horror films made in the last 20 years. Season 5 is no worse though. Come to think of it I can't say 4's better than 5. They're about equal in awesomeness. And not to taint this thread but if any of you haven't seen Chris Carter's other series Millennium do yourself a favor and buy the first two seasons (the 2 best seasons of tv, ever) right motherfucking now. It's a darker, grittier version of the X-Files and Lance Henriksen is the fucking man. Anyways... Favorite Episodes: Season One Squeeze - flipping through the channels on a friday night I stumbled upon a set of yellow eyes peering out of a sewer. Thus my love of the X-Files began & subsequently partying on Friday nights had to wait until 10:00pm. Tooms is one of the best monsters the show ever put out. Ice - basically a remake of Carpenter's The Thing. And a quality one at that. Beyond The Sea - this is the first episode where we get to see who Scully really is which in turn added so much depth to her character. The scenes with her & Dourif are really great. Young At Heart - Barnett is one of a long line of classic X-File villains. E.B.E. - one of the best mythology episodes. If I'm not mistaken this is the first time the Lone Gunmen make an appearance. Shapes - outside of American Werewolf, Howling & The Wolf Man this is the best werewolf, well, werewolf anything that I've ever seen. There's one kill where we see the silhouette of the monster ripping someone to shreds. While not long at all that was masterfully executed little scene. When our heroes are in a dark house with a werewolf lurking around..... That shit is suspenseful. Darkness Falls - awesome ending! Tooms - I love me some Tooms. The Erlenmeyer Flask - sets up season 2 beautifully.

Yeah, I'm dying to give it one big burst. Unfortunately, I'm going travelling for a few months, so I won't be able to watch it for awhile..but when I come back, I think I'll pick up that Region 1 Complete Series set. Looks fuckin' awesome.

Love the show (i own the new box set) and love the movie. Bring on the sequel already. The show is easily one of the best TV had to offer.
