I take Deep Red for the win, though admittedly im not all that familiar with the genre. And another thing: alot of people are mentioning suspiria....from my understanding of what a giallo is and isnt, suspiria doesnt really qualify as one. I suppose theres a bit of murder mystery involved, and it has stylized graphic death scenes, but to me its supernatural bent lends it to more of a fantasy horror approach than anything else, almost in the same realm as The Beyond (not that the plots bear ANY similarities but both are disjointed tales of supernatural horror). Same goes for Inferno, really. Maybe im just talking out of my ass, but thats the way I see it.

While Sleepless is not Argento's best Giallo, I truly think the opening train sequence is awesome, and Max Von Sydow shines as an actor with a director not known for having high caliber dramatists. Anyway, I rented this movie a couple of years ago on DVD, but cannot find a copy of it anywhere. Amazon lists it, but it is out of stock. I would like to add this film to my ever growing library of giallo.

Definitely Dario's best post-Opera (post-Op?) film. I think if I didn't enjoy SLEEPLESS I probably wouldn't have such high expectations for LA TERZA MADRE. It's not even close to his all time best, but it did show he could still "bring it". The only American release of SLEEPLESS I know of is a pan & scan release from Artisan with no extras. That's what I have. It deserves a better treatment from a better company. You should be able to find a copy of that release on Ebay for pretty cheap. |
