I went on a little bit of a noir spree a while back. Here are some that stuck with me:
This Gun for Hire The Blue Dahlia Scarlet Street Where the Sidewalk Ends Kansas City Confidential Murder my Sweet Pitfall Quote:

The genre definitely does still exist. The Square(not a big fan), out of Aussie. A Simple Plan directed by Sam Raimi could probably be classified as film noir.

" Detour -1945 " is probably one of my favorites. The part with the phone-wire is classic. I would have to agree also about Sin City, though I do love it, it's intentionally a cartoony version of noir. But I feel the Dexter TV series has definite elements of modern or neo-noir. An questionable and ultimately flawed protagonist who follows his own code of honor, dealing his own kind of justice, in a festering cesspool of a city. There is no black and white just varying shades of grey.
This coupled with of course the Voice Over/noir internal monologue with some hard-poetic prose.

The Killing of Stanley Kubrick is my favorite ... has all the makings of a good Film Noir: a femme fatale, a rarefied social climate and a law enforcement somewhat corrupt.
Also the other day I saw The Element of Crime by Lars Von Trier, and it reminded me a lot this style. Filmed in sepia and full of visual inventiveness at all levels. Visually powerful, connected with some of the classic films of its kind in the recreation of scenes from films of psychopathic murderers. |
