also, has anyone else read the book and wondered what the movie would have been like if they had left Jack's wife as she was written? in the book she was a hot blonde, outspoken and independent, but i read somewhere that they cast shelly duvall because they wanted someone that the audience would almost pity, someone more submissive to Jack and his anger.

just a thought
The movie kicks the books arse!

I read it as a teen and thought it was so boring. I picked it up again a couple years ago thinking i would appreciate it more being older, but nah, it's crap! Backstory and character development are important of course, but reading through over 300 pages of it before anything interesting happens made me dislike the folks!

I don't think it would've made much difference to depict Duval's character the same as she was in the book (but Kubrick did keep the incessant nagging of the wife). The backstory of the hotel was interesting but i think it would've slowed the film down too much. As it stands, the hotel is much more mysterious in the film then it is the book.

The Shining is one of the few movies I watch whenever I see it on tv (Jurassic Park being the other) no matter what. I also own the movie and recomend it whenever a friend asks me for a great scary movie.

I watched this film so many times, it because a routine to watch some of it every night, a habit which has since been broken.

Great film. It scared me more the second time round. Since then i've watched it many, many times to try and get the same feeling I did then, but I never have
