I think Godzilla vs Biollante was the best G movie done so far. I really liked the series of films they did in the late 80's and 90's. The newer films were good all except Final Wars..

my only problems with final wars is they used special effects and the matrix fights.

Ahhh...sooo.

It's good to see Godzilla getting face time on BD. I think he's one of the most iconic and original monsters ever created, and I love all the films that I've seen--even ther truly silly installments meant to appeal to children.

I've only seen one or two of the 90's/00's films. Godzilla 2000 was pleasant as was Tokyo S.O.S. Was the series rebooted once or twice? I understand that the intention was to overlook much of the 60's material and begin the newer series as if the only attack had been in 1954. The newer suits look really sharp even though my favorite is still the one from Destroy All Monsters. I like how his dorsal plates now crackle with radiant energy when he fires up his heat ray, and how the ray has developed from a sort of bluish vapor to a very precise stream of plasma energy that just rips shit apart.

I love that you mentioned Destroy all monsters, that was one of my favourite films in my adolesence.

Great point about godzillas heat ray, his glowing dorsal fin really does make it seem like he's just hurling so much power.

Another of the best Godzilla films was the first godzilla vs mecha-godzilla, i remember it being one of the more violent movies of that g-era.

They like to call then era instead of reboots, not like it redefines things exactally and there's been 3. They don't ignore previous eras exactly, but only include certain bit in their new builds.

This is truely an awesome read for any fan.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godzilla

Fifteen Showa-era films
Seven Heisei-era films
Six Millennium-era films

As you noted, they all use the 1954 film as cannon, but aren't commited to earlier eras. Last I heard, the next era will start in 2014.

I've tracked down some of the related films at the bottom of the article, cool stuff. In a way, all these films are truely unique, (as are many other Japanese films) coming from the only country ever hit with a nuclear bomb. I see them as a window to Japan. Not saying they're profound exactly, but it's still a window.

Somewhere along the line, the suits at Toho must have realized that in turning Godzilla into a friend and defender of children that they had made him into a rather abject parody of himself (isn't there a scene in on of the 70's films [Godzilla vs Gigan?] where Godzilla and Angurus actually speak to each other--or was that just a poor decision made on the part of whatever company dubbed it into english for distribution in the West?). At any rate, the newer films are a much-needed return to form. The new Godzilla rampages and destroys with no conscience and no anthropomophic sense that he is doing a lot of harm. He's just a force in nature--unstoppable and indestructable.

Well, with the exception of a few entries (like Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla and Tokyo S.O.S.), very few of the Millennium entries had any form of continuity between each other. Hell, Final Wars and All Out Monster Attack completely ignore the other films and establish their own backstories altogether.

The Heisei saga is my favorite. 1985, Biollante, and Destroyer all rule.

Think that was a fan edit of a whole film, not a YouTube clip if anyone should suggest it. Yeah, I like the idea of eras myself. Any character or series is sure to run out of steam otherwise.

Look at Batman, there's a few runs even before Adam West (B&W serials) 2 movies runs, and several different cartoon series. All based on the same character, but not full sequels of previous incarnations if even remotely related it most of the time.
