Default I Saw the Devil (Remake)

Apparently Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett are attached, but it's still very early in the process.

Not sure how I feel about it yet. I love the original, but I also really enjoy Wingard and Barrett's work thus far- The Guest was fantastic. Time will tell.

Here's a link to the story:

And the producer spilling the beams:

This is the Korean movie, right?

Well, so long as the makers get some career advancement out of it, it'll make the re-cultural-ization of it worthwhile

I mean, it's a great story, and even language aside, understanding the cultural aspects of the original wouldn't be easy for many non-Asian audiences

I met this cow, with this blank, pale, emotionless face, and the blackest eyes... the devil's eyes. I spent eight years trying to reach her, and then another seven trying to keep her locked up because I realized that what was living behind that cow's eyes was purely and simply... evil.

I'm not a big fan of remakes of foreign language films, but I usually end up seeing them and more often than not, I end up enjoying them.

This. Wingard and Barrett are two people in horror right now who I want to find success and if it gets their name and the original film more exposure I'm all for it.

I see producers are in a hurry to lose a bunch of money.

Did the Oldboy remake teach them nothing? It flopped. They had a prominant director, and a few A-list stars, remaking one of the most iconic Korean flicks ever made, and it still flopped. This is a good idea though? I get it when the goal is pure greed, but this doesn't even have that. It's going to flop. What is the point?

Just write an original revenge flick.

It's a bit of different with this remake. Oldboy (and its remake) contain some pretty difficult subject matter. Hard to market a film like that, regardless of the director/cast. Not surprising that it didn't do much at the box office.

As for the ISTD remake, normally I would be indifferent. With Wingard and Barrett behind it, my interest is piqued.

I'm sure it didn't help that Oldboy premiered in only 500 theaters or something. Hard to turn that big a profit if the majority of North America can't go see your film.

It's not like people didn't go see it because it was a Korean remake. With the same marketing and theaters, an "original" revenge flick most likely would have put up worse numbers.

I don't think there's enough talent in Hollywood to write anything original or at least those with the talent are too expensive to secure for a project that doesn't fit the blockbuster mold.
