Default Love Exposure (2008)

I don't know if this should be in the horror section, but really it's a bit of everything! It's directed by Shion Sono who's done Suicide Club and Norioko's Dinner Table.

IMDb describes it as : Three emotionally abused people from the fringes of society get locked in a convoluted love triangle. Yuu, a Catholic boy searching for true love ends up taking erotic photographs of women in public until he discovers Yoko, whom he sees as his Virgin Mary. Yoko, an antifamily, misandristic girl finds that her foster mother will be marrying Yuu's father. Koike, an "original sinner", coordinates a plan to convert Yuu's family to her cult. Under her careful direction, their lives come crashing together in one fateful street fight.

I recorded it on Film4 after the third time it had been on. The reason I was so hesitant was because it's FOUR BLOODY HOURS! And I never had enough room on my recorded DVD's! After all the hype, it was actually pretty brilliant. It moves at a surprisingly fast pace and the characters are all given a lot of depth and detail. However, I found it too long. Three hours would've been enough, but after that it just felt like they were stretching it our for the sake of it. However, it is worth a watch! I've never seen anything quite like it before.

Yep, everything he said, apart from "However, I found it too long. Three hours would've been enough". I honestly felt like the movie just zipped by, couldn't believe it held my attention for its entire run time.

Did you catch 'Kamikaze Girls' or 'Memories of Matsuko' when Film4 showed them? Another couple of top quality Asian flicks.

I am turned off by the length as well, but I have to give it a go soon, since I own this movie on Blu.

Oh no, it did hold my attention well, it just seemed to carry on for the sake of it. E.g. I don't feel any need for the part when he joins the porn industry to go on for so long! Apparently it was originally six hours and the director could only cut it down to four!

Kamikaze Girls didn't really sound like my thing, isn't it some sort of rom com? And I don't recall a film called Memories of Matsuko being on, but I'll certainly keep my eyes peeled from now on. Ta for the recommendations

Six hours?! Bloody hell.

Nah, it's all about the unlikely friendship of two very unalike girls, to the backdrop of rival girl biker gangs kicking each other's arses.

Oh, and 'Fish Story', which Film4 showed sometime last week. Cool little film, all about how an obscure Japanese punk song nobody's heard of might be mankind's saviour in the year 2012. It's very clever how the various story threads (eventually) come together.

I just saw Fish Story last night! I thought it was really good too. It kind of reminded me of Pulp Fiction with having little stories which leave you wondering how they're linked until the end. It was very clever, although I found the story of the punk band a bit dull compared to the rest and over long. Other than that it was great!
