You know, I was almost ready to say, "Fuck that noise!", but I thought about it a minute and I think you're right.

Dawn of the Dead is still one of my favorite zombie movie of all time (yes, the remake), because it's a lot of fun with a lot of great tense moments. It also defied a lot of people's expectations, changing a lot of people's minds on a wider scale.

Maniac, however, just worked on a different level. It was more than popcorn fun, it was dark, disturbing and stays in your mind for a while. I put it on the level of Martyrs, Kill List and À L'intérieur, where it's a real horror fan's kind of horror movie.

Maniac is 100% better than those films (Except maybe Hills) but If I would much rather watch Last House, Evil Dead or Dawn of the Dead.

Like you said, Maniac is dark and very disturbing. Need to be in the right mind set to watch it IMO.

Great cinematography (The POV style was used perfectly) some nice brutal kills, awesome 80's style synth score, and Woods (Who I originally thought was the worst possible choice for the role) ended up winning me over. Great job, Frodo.

IMO, this is easily the best of the modern remakes. It shits all over Evil Dead, Dawn Of The Dead and The Hills Have Eyes. WHY DIDN'T THIS GET A WIDE RELEASE???!!!

9/10
This ^^^^^
The score was creepy as shit
The POV style was a fresh concept (to me anyways)
The acting was great (very apprehensive about Elijah Wood to me he is still the young kid in The Good Son)
The scalping's were very real as well as the rest of the gore.

This was very disturbing and dark. This is one of those rare examples where the remake surpass the original.

The HHE remake sticks too close to the original. It's almost a scene for scene remake. Maniac (besides a few nods to the original) is pretty much it's own movie. And that's one of the reasons why it's better.

I don't know for sure but it might be "Good-bye Horses," by Q. Lazzarus. It was in Silence of the Lambs which is probably why it's so familiar.

I generally dislike remakes but this was definitely one of the better ones. I still prefer the original but there's alot to like about this movie. The score was one of the biggest positives for me.

I am REALLY looking forward to this. I am a huge AJA fan and I've heard that it's pretty hardcore. It's been a long time since I've seen a brutal film in theaters, actually it was probably the Hills Have Eyes. Where are you guys seeing this movie? I am in the US, is it released overseas?
