Gerard Butler was in negotiations back in 2007. I mean, c'mon man!

According to this little interview from '07, he is absolutely clear about a cameo.

F--- that! I am Snake Plissken! It's like Sean Connery always watching someone else do their version of Bond.
I guess his mind didn't change regarding this question.

Replacing Kurt Russell as Snake Plissken is like replacing Clint Eastwood as Dirty Harry. It's just... all kinds of wrong.

And an 'Escape' movie without Carpenter's cynicism and music permeating every frame? That's not an 'Escape' movie at all.

Plot Details For New Escape From New York Trilogy

Herner Klenthur Feb 16th, 2014

We have been talking about the new Escape from New York trilogy for what feels like ages. It might not be ages but it has been many years in the works.

In fact the last real update we had was the release of Lockout a 2012 movie that starred Guy Pearce and smelled like a rip off of Escape from Earth one of the conceived plots for a new Snake Plissken movie.

The movies main characters name was ‘Snow’ not ‘Snake’ but the plot will sound familiar and if you saw the film so was the character.

A man wrongly convicted of conspiracy to commit espionage against the U.S. is offered his freedom if he can rescue the president’s daughter from an outer space prison taken over by violent inmates.

Unlike many I actually enjoyed the hell out of the film and have seen it a dozen times but its now Escape. Joel Silver has finally given an update on the long awaited new Escape From New York project telling Collider that the project is still very much alive but that the script is not complete yet.

In the interview he also talked with them about the inspiration for the plot and how the new trilogy will not only tell the story of Snake Plissken but also how New York specificaly Manhattan became the island prison. Joel told them quote;

“There was a videogame that came out a few years ago called Arkham City, which shows how when Gotham became this kind of walled prison and how it became a walled prison. And they never deal with that in the story of ‘Escape from New York,’ so part of our idea was to kind of see how the city became this walled prison and how the Snake Plissken character was a hero and how he became not looked at as a hero.

And then, in the middle of the story, would be the movie that we, you know, previously saw about the President’s daughter goes down, he has to go in and get her. And then, you know, they did a sequel, Escape from LA, but I would like to then kind of find a way to have New York go back to a place that we’d like to see what it is today.”

Frankly I am not a big fan of the need to tell the story over three films but as of late that seems to be the new trend. Why do one good movie when you can milk things and make it into three films.

Some time back MoviesOnline caught up with Kurt Russell and asked him about the remake and what he thought. His response was pretty hilarious.

Who cares what I think about it? I couldn’t care less, but what he thinks about… Uh-oh! (Laughs) I think I’ve done a lot of movies but I’ve never done a sequel. So I left the door open for a lot of guys to make a lot of money. I think I’ve done a lot of movies – I know I have – that people would like to have seen a sequel to. I grew up in a time when we didn’t do sequels. You just did a movie because you wanted to do a movie and you wanted to tell a story. It wasn’t to build a franchise. I’m a bit locked into that. I did ESCAPE FROM LA because I wanted to play Snake one more time and I wanted to work with John one more time. That film will not die.

When asked if he would return to the iconic role he said quote;

For a shitload of money, I’d consider it. And I mean a shitload!

The question at this point is who could play the role of Snake Plissken and give it justice? Since it is clearly going to be an origins story it needs to also be somebody youngish.

The last person and as far as I can remember the only person ever attached to play the role was Gerard Butler and that was back when Len Wiseman was slated to direct the remake. Gerard Butler left as did Len Wiseman over the classic ‘creative differences’.

Since then I have not heard any good names come up. Probably the only person who comes to mind that could potentially pull it off would be Tom Hardy who is not only a talented actor but proved he can play the ultimate bad ass with his portrayal of BANE in The Dark Knight Rises.

That casting is extremely unlikely when you consider that Tom Brady is playing Mad Max in that franchise reboot and having the same person play Mad Max and Snake Plissken is not realistic.
