He definitely deserved to win but the academy didn't give two shits about TDK other than Ledger's performance. It deserved to be nominated for Best Picture at least but oh well.

Not so fast. There were tons of nominations for it, but it won only two. The one for Ledger and for Best Sound Editing.
Nominated further for:
- Best Cinematography
- Best Sound Mixing
- Best Editing
- Best Make-Up
- Best Visual Effects
- Best Art Direction
That's quite a lot. Yet, no Best Picture nomination at all.
