My Super Psycho Sweet 16: Director Jacob Gentry

By: MrDisgusting

A pampered teen convinces her wealthy father to renovate a dilapidated roller rink for her sweet sixteen bash, only to have the party crashed by the serial killer who haunted their town ten years earlier. Premieres Oct. 23rd at 10pm ET/PT on MTV.

BD: Was there a moment of fear starting the film knowing it was going to be for MTV?

JG: Not really. My first short film I made when I was a freshman in high school (a teenager spoof of T2) premiered on MTV so I feel like I’ve come full circle.

BD: How do you plan to make a slasher film that will play on TV?

JG: Well you know going in you’re not making IRREVERSIBLE or MARTYRS or ICHI THE KILLER, but you just go as far as the story and the slasher genre demands and let them pull you back if need be. I think some of the most influential slasher films could play fairly unedited on basic cable.

BD: Now, there’s a bloodier version (which we saw), how much extra blood did they allow you to shoot, and how much was cut for TV. Also, can you tell everyone how they can see the uncut version?

JG: There are a couple of key moments we had to cut, but hopefully the movie works just as well in it’s edited form. The uncut version is there for the serious horror fans and super fans of the movie to seek out and should be available on download to own not too long after it airs on TV.

BD: This was a short shoot on a shoestring budget, how did you experience on THE SIGNAL make this easier/harder?

JG: If this was shoestring then THE SIGNAL was fishing wire. The Signal was invaluable in learning that on a low budget and a tight schedule the one thing you can’t compromise on is the actor’s performance. I’m very proud of the performances in both of these films. If the audience believes in the world of your characters and care about what happens to them then the budget doesn’t matter.

BD: Who did the casting, both females leads were incredible?

JG: My casting director Jason Wood and I saw over a hundred girls for the leads and we knew we wanted Julianna and Lauren from the minute they first auditioned. We really hit the jackpot with these two. They are both very intelligent and committed actors.

BD: Did you have to subject yourself to My Super Sweet 16 before filming this to get a feel for the real-deal bitches?

JG: Before I saw the show I didn’t really want to do this movie, but then when I finally sat down and watched it I got totally addicted. The attraction of the show is that you are both appalled and allured to the spoiled girls. Most of my favorite horror movies have some sort of satire or social commentary going on that makes them relevant. And what better metaphor during an economic crisis than to contrast a spoiled girl and her enabling father with an social outcast and her psycho killer father? If you make the audience choose who should get it in the end, most people choose the rich girl.

BD: If you were one of the high schoolers in the movie in, which one were you?

JG: I’ll make that movie someday. The characters in this movie are archetypes made real cause that was the kind of story we were telling. I was kind of all them and none of them at the same time. I was more like the characters in a James L. Brooks movie. My personal experience wouldn’t really work in a slasher film.

BD: SIGNAL sequel, TV series maybe? Eh, eh?

JG: I would love to continue the SIGNAL universe over all forms of media. There’s definitely something brewing in the lab. When we’re ready you’ll be the first to know.
