Friday the 13th (2009): Andrew Form & Brad Fuller

By: BC

The pic directed by Marcus Nispel is the retelling of the original Friday the 13th about teenaged summer camp counselors that are systematically slaughtered by a mysterious killer. Jason Voorhees will wear the mask and kill, keeping the famous setting of Crystal Lake.

BD: Can you guys set the record straight on the sequel or remake question? Some people seem to think it’s taking place around the time of the first few movies

Form: Well it’s definitely not a sequel. It’s what we call a reboot of the Friday the 13th franchise. So it would lean more toward a remake but it’s not a remake of Friday the 13th, because we all know Jason is only in the last scene of that movie. He’s definitely the killer in this film.

BD: So it’s more like Casino Royale or Batman Begins...

Fuller: Exactly.

BD: You guys have mentioned parts 2-4 as an influence, can you go into a little more detail on that? Are we talking like, those types of kills, the types of characters, the locations [later films sort of went outside the usual summer camp/lake area]?

Form: (to Fuller) Those were your bible...

Fuller: Right. What we did was take the story points that were presented in 1-4, and that was our bible. That is what we went for, and then came up with the story for this movie. We got rid of everything that came after the fourth one. We wanted it to be set on Crystal Lake, we wanted the scares to be horrifying, we wanted kids to be having sex and drinking and smoking and having fun. So that’s why we kept it within those first four movies.

BD: Let’s talk about that money shot in the teaser [the last shot, which features a very fast moving Jason scrambling toward and then swinging a machete at a girl on the ground]. What’s going on there, besides obviously killing someone?

Form: Well... [he’s worried about spoilers]

Fuller: (shrugs) He is! (laughs)

Form: We wanted to show the audience that Jason moves in this film, he does not walk-

BD: Or teleport.

Form: He does not teleport! When he moves he moves quickly, and when he strikes he strikes fast. And that was why we used that shot to close the trailer, just to show everyone that this IS a different Jason.

Fuller: We also wanted to show that the sack was in there, from part 2.

Form: Right, the sack, and then obviously the mask from part 3.

BD: One thing about 3, when they made it, no one was expecting Jason to be the most prolific movie slasher of all time, or that the mask would be this iconic image that would last for the rest of the series. And so when he first appears with it [in 3] it’s kind of matter-of-fact; he just sort of has it on all of a sudden. So one reason why I am excited for your movie is that I assume you will be correcting that?

Form: Yes. We talked about it with the writers... that IS the iconic moment of the movie, when he takes the sack off and puts the hockey mask on, you KNOW Jason is born!

Fuller: And it’s a hard scene. We want it to feel as iconic as it can. We shot it in half a day, it was quick, and I don’t think we realized how important it WAS when we shot it. So we’re working very hard to make that scene perfect.

BD: One thing I didn’t see much of in the trailer was daytime. When I think about the older ones, particularly 2 and 3, I think of a lot of daytime scenes, the more suspense type stuff. How much daytime will be in the film, if any?

Form: A lot of the movie takes place during the day. That was just a conscious choice with this piece [the Comic Con teaser]. When we go back and release a full trailer I think you’ll see more of the daytime. But you know, yeah, these kids are on the lake, having fun, doing things, and he does stalk during the day. A lot of stuff happens during the day. I’d say 65% night and 35% day.

BD: At the panel you guys mentioned that you’re still not definitely doing Nightmare on Elm St... what’s the holdup?

Form: We would like nothing more than to work on that movie. And we’ve expressed our interest to the studio-

Fuller: And to a room of three thousand people!

Form: Yeah. And we’re just waiting to see, waiting to hear from them.

BD: So while you’re waiting on that, are things still moving forward on Rosemary’s Baby and The Birds?

Fuller: Rosemary we’re trying to hire a writer right now, and The Birds we turned in a treatment to the studio, and we’re waiting to hear back on that. Birds is big, we got Martin Campbell, he’s a major dude. Naomi Watts keeps saying she wants to do the movie, and that’s a big deal.

Form: You know, we’re working on The Unborn and Friday the 13th right now, so we’re in post production on two films, trying to find what the next one’s gonna be. We’d love Elm to be the next one. That’s what we’re aiming towards.

BD: How is Unborn going?

Form: Unborn’s going great. David Goyer is an amazing talent, and we’re lucky to be working with him. He’s editing now, and we’re waiting to see it.

Fuller: It’s a different kind of film for us, because it’s not a remake. It’s a PG-13 film; it’s an original idea from Goyer. Usually we work with first time directors, but this is a guy who has done a lot in the business, and it was a great experience for us, working with a guy who had his shit together.

BD: And The Horsemen?

Form: We’re waiting. We’re at that point with Mandate, who we made the film with, waiting to see who is going to distribute the film. We just finished it.

Fuller: It’s a different kind of film for us. It’s not really a horror movie; it’s more of an art thriller. Jonas Akerlund is an artist; he’s done a lot of amazing stuff. So we’re just waiting to find a home for that.

(NOTE – After the recorder was turned off, we briefly discussed The Hitcher, and Form and Fuller revealed that Kyle Davis, who played the memorable gas station clerk in Hitcher, was the owner of the hockey mask in Friday the 13th, who obviously loses it to Jason “somehow”).
