Received a small tip today that Luís Tossar (although I'm pretty sure they meant Luís Tosar) will be toplining Flatmate for Filmax International. Tosar starred in Cell 211 and about a gazillion other Spanish films. Flatmate is to be directed by Jaume Balagueró off the success of his collaboration on REC and REC 2. Gearing up for the world premiere in Baltimore (click here for info) Bloody Disgusting's Tex Massacre got his hands on a copy of President's Day, a new slasher film that wooed him. "The way I see it, President’s Day is a quantum leap forward for a fledgling filmmaker who has proven over the last 4-years that he’s more than capable making quality films for less. Urban-focused production company Deon Taylor Enterprises has launched a genre label. "Nite Tales Presents" is inspired by "Nite Tales", the 1998 horror anthology narrated by rapper Flavor Flav that Taylor co-wrote and served as executive producer on. Screen Daily reports that the company will create genre content for film and television as well as animated children’s series and a branded interactive online platform. Taylor (Chain Letter - penned by Thomas Fenton) will direct and produce for the label and collaborate with such writers as Thomas Fenton from Saw IV and Chain Letter. Flavor Flav has signed on as the recurring host and face of Nite Tales Presents. The first two features to go will be the two-part anthology Dark Christmas and Terminated. We've got a look at the newest trailer for the Chilean independent action horror film Blind Death (Muerte Ciega). Directed by Cristian Toledo and Lucio Rojas, after a mining disaster, a large area is ravaged by a strange virus that turns humans into a violent and territorial animals. The area is placed in quarantine, not knowing what happened. Years later a group of mercenaries and scientists is sent to investigate the truth about the zone. Bloody Disgusting learned that Peter Briggs (Hellboy co-writer, and the forthcoming Mortis Rex) will be getting beind the camera for Panzer 88 from his own screenplay. Gary Kurtz (Star Wars(!)) is producing. In an interview with Briggs from this past October we learned that "Panzer is another supernatural thriller: basically a character piece set in a German King Tiger tank in Russia in World War 2. It's five guys in a tin can, and something's trying to stop them making it home. It's creepy, and smart." Briggs is also scheduled to direct Mortis Rex, which was announced in the trades last November with Mummy producer Jim Jacks. Mortis is currently in pre-production.
Now arriving in UK cinemas April 9 is Andrew Shortell's Psych: 9, which features Cary Elwes (Saw), Sara Foster, Gabriel Mann and Michael Biehn (Terminator, Grindhouse). In the Universal Pictures international release, Lawrence Robinson script revolves around an unstable woman who takes a job organizing patient records at a recently closed hospital. Just announced a few hours ago is the official line up for the South by Southwest Film Festival (SXSW). One of the films premiering as part of the "Midnighters" category is Andrew Bowser's microbudget Jimmy Tupper VS. The Goatman of Bowie, a film that "was made out of my love for films like 'Evil Dead,' 'Pumpkinhead,' 'Gremlins', and a million other horror films!" Bowser explained to BD. In the "first true found footage horror pieces, Jimmy Tupper is no one, he's nothing, until one night he sees something in the woods that can't be real. When the original Slime City was released as a midnight movie back in the late 80s, I’m pretty sure that just about everybody would have called you a crazy bastard if you’d told them that more than two decades later, writer and director Greg Lamberson would once again fill up gallons and gallons of green jelly and get ready to shoot the longtime overdue sequel to his slime-tastic splatter fest from 20 years ago. "For their part, the actors seem to be enjoying themselves, the story is solid, and the creature effects are astoundingly good for the budget range they're in.
