Best Stephen King novel to start with

Post by Biohazardous » Sat Apr 08, 2017 4:47 pm

I have never read a Stephen King novel before and would like to change this. Of course I have seen a lot of movies based on his work so I thought I should give it a try. What book do you recommend to start with?

Salem's Lot. His second novel, and still my fave overall of his. He wrote actually scary vampires back then.
If you want to be more ambitious, IT, but it's over 1000 pages and the ending is, like many of his works during the 80s, a bit underwhelming.
Or, if you want to dip your toes into the water before diving in, try Skeleton Crew. One his very best short story collections. Greatly shows his abilities at his best.

Thanks for your advise. :D
I really like vampire stories so Salem's Lot sounds like a good option.

It's one of his books you just can't go wrong with. Salem's Lot was one the very first ones I read of King and to date remains my favorite of his, and King my all-time favorite author.

If the size doesn't intimidate you, The Stand is his best IMO

I'd recommend Carrie as a good starting point. Fairly straightforward.

If you want something that will hook you quickly I would recommend Pet Semetary.

I echo Pet Semetary, it's one of his scariest novels and a pretty quick read.

The Body, short story or novella which the movie Stand By Me is based on. The story is from Different Seasons book with 3 other stories.
