[News Bites] Another Hitchcock Remake, Syfy’s “Bigfoot”, Cast For ‘NSFW’ & Kevin Williamson Serial Killer Series

Published

With EFM still in full swing, and the Toy Fair landing right in the middle, the news has been out of control. In an attempt to keep some sort of order to the madness, here’s a late night round-up of breaking stories.

After the break you can check out the first ever casting for the Joe Johnston-directed thriller NSFW, along with some surprise names added to Fox’s untitled Kevin Williamson serial killer thriller about a network of murderers.

You’ll also read about yet another Alfred Hitchock remake, a book series that’ll get the big screen and small screen treatment, and check out a first look at the Syfy creature feature “Bigfoot.”

Pictured above, the Syfy creature feature “Bigfoot” — starring Barry Williams and Danny Bonaduce — will be hitting the small screen later this year. The two former child stars play lifelong rivals (naturally) who both are trying to capture the hairy beast, but for very different reasons. This cinematic tour de force (to be directed by Bruce Davison) also stars Sherilyn Fenn (“Twin Peaks”), Howard Hesseman (“WKRP in Cincinnati”), and shock rocker extraordinaire Alice Cooper (School’s Out).

Another Alfred Hitchock remake is on the horizon as Paramount PIctures is developing Suspicion, tapped Veena Sud of AMC’s “The Killing” to direct and pen the script. The original film, based on Francis IIles’s 1932 novel “Before the Fact,” “centered on a dowdy young woman (portrayed by Joan Fontaine) marrying an irresponsible charmer (played by Cary Grant) despite the strong disapproval of her wealthy father — and then beginning to suspect that her husband plans to kill her.” Fontaine won a best actress Oscar for her perf in the 1941 feature.

The Social Network and The Darkest Hour thesp Max Minghella and “The River” star Eloise Mumford are in talks to star in Universal Pictures’ and Blumhouse Prods.’ (Paranormal Activity, Insidious) low-budget thriller Not Safe For Work, which Joe Johnston will direct. Adam Mason and Simon Boyes (Devil’s Chair, Blood River) wrote the script, which “follows a young paralegal trapped in an office with a killer on a secret mission to destroy files and anyone that stands in his path.” Minghella is in talks to play the cunning protag, while Mumford is in talks to play his girlfriend, who works at the same office.

Shawn Ashmore (Frozen, Mother’s Day, The Day, Ruins) and Valorie Curry (Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2) have joined the cast of Fox’s untitled Kevin Williamson drama pilot led by Kevin Bacon and James Purefoy. The project, from Warner Bros TV, is described as an edge-of-the-seat thriller “about Joe Carroll (Purefoy) a diabolical serial killer who uses technology to create a cult of serial killers, and retired FBI profiler Ryan Hardy (Bacon) who finds himself in the middle of it.” Ashmore will play a junior FBI agent who is part of the task force assisting Hardy in the search for Carroll. Curry will play a young nanny who cares for Carroll’s son. Marcos Siega is directing the pilot.

Variety reports that the famed sci-fi Darkover novels may soon morph into a television series. Producers Ilene Kahn Power and Elizabeth Stanley have secured the rights to author Marion Zimmer Bradley’s renowned novels and have already pitched the project to one cabler and are making presentations to others as well. The series would be based on Bradley’s 20 books, some of which “detail the colonization on a new planet where the inhabitants begin their own species.” While the first may be a feature film, the aim is to turn this into a series.

In addition to Leigh Whannell’s upcoming Universal Monsters movie Wolf Man, Julia Garner (The Royal Hotel) has also joined the cast of Weapons, THR has announced tonight.

Weapons is the new horror movie from New Line Cinema and director Zach Cregger (Barbarian), with Julia Garner joining the previously announced Josh Brolin (Dune 2).

The upcoming Weapons is from writer/director Zach Cregger, who will also produce alongside his Barbarian producing team: Roy Lee of Vertigo and J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules of BoulderLight Pictures. Vertigo’s Miri Yoon also produces.

The Hollywood Reporter teases, “Plot details for Weapons are being kept holstered but it is described as a multi and inter-related story horror epic that tonally is in the vein of Magnolia, the 1999 actor-crammed showcase from filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson.”

Cregger was a founding member and writer for the New York comedy troupe “The Whitest Kids U’Know,” which he started while attending The School of Visual Arts. The award-winning group’s self-titled sketch comedy show ran for five seasons on IFC-TV and Fuse. He was also a series regular on Jimmy Fallon’s NBC series “Guys with Kids” and the TBS hit series “Wrecked,” and was featured in a recurring role on the NBC series “About a Boy.”

Weapons will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures.
