Default Pontypool (2009)

The flick is set in a radio station in Pontypool where one day the morning team starts taking reports of extreme, bloody incidents of violence occurring in town. As the story unfolds, the radio staff soon realizes the violence that is ripping society apart is due to a virus being spread through the English language. That in turn poses a problem for a yappy radio jock and his staff holed up in the broadcast booth housed in the basement of the town's abandoned church as a slaughter rages beyond its walls.

Saw the trailer at F13. Looks like a pretty basic zombie flick, but found out it's directed by Canadian Bruce MacDonald (Hard Core Logo), and so I figured I'd pimp it a little bit. Could be interesting....or terrible, take your pick.

Discuss.

I'm really looking forward to this flick. Its prolly my top movie of 09 Im tracking. Ive been looking for the book Pontypool Changes Everything but not had much luck. Anybody read the book?

I think alot of people will compare Dead Air with Pontypool. Looking forward to both movies.

I just got back from seeing the movie. It was actually really awesome. Bruce McDonald is one of the best Canadian filmmakers ever. If you haven't seen his movies Hard Core Logo or Highway 61, you ought to. They own super hard.

Anyway, I really liked the movie. From the first scene, it had me feeling really creeped out. The tone he set was really scary, you felt like you were in this radio station with the main characters and the chaos going on outside was just closing in around you, and you didn't really know exactly what was going on. That had to be my favourite part of the movie, how creepy it was.

If it even comes out in your city, go see it. Help Bruce make more awesome movies.

Spoiler Below
I wanna go see it again to catch all the words that infected different people. There was a part where I'm pretty sure Stephen McHattie was infected, and then came back. Although, he could have just been really freaking out, which would be fair enough.

The title is the name of the town the movie takes place in, which is pretty significant. Blame Jasper Tutor for naming the bridge the town is named after. Also, since Pontypool is a nonsensical word, and the virus is spread through the English language, that's fairly significant.
Research pays off.

Fantastic! That doesn't change the fact that it's not a great title.

I doubt it'll get a theatrical release here (even though it's still Canada), although my fingers are crossed.

I'd imagine there'd be at least a limited theatrical release...

you know, there was a movie that came out in '08 called Dead Air starring Bill Moseley that had almost the exact same premise. zombies and radio stations. both directors even have the same "the zombies aren't really zombies" argument.

hmm . . .

Yeah, I heard that, too. However, Dead Air was made in 2008. The book that Pontypool is based on was published in 1998.

yea but dead air looks low budget, and bootleg. not that pontypool looks terrific, as there's like 1 or 2 seconds of zombie violence in the trailer, but it does look alot better visually. and from the reviews i've read the book pontypool's adapted from is supposed to be a pretty good, original take on zombies.

anybody read the book? i'm kinda more excited about reading it, then seeing the movie.
