Targeted for Remake: Jacob's Ladder
Buried in a Variety piece about the script acquisition of a crime spec called Transit we found a bombshell of an announcement: Producer Alison Rosenzweig is at work on developing a remake to Adrien Lyne's 1990 mindfuck of a movie Jacob's Ladder. No further details were revealed. Inspired by Ambrose Bierce's "An Occurence at Owl Creek Bridge," Jacob's Ladder finds a Vietnam vet/postal employee (Tim Robbins) suffering nightmarish visions. Suspecting he was exposed to a nerve agent while in the war and that demons are following him, he begins to lose his grip on reality. Amazing film and amazing script by Bruce Joel Rubin. One can only imagine what an update could do with America's current occupation in Iraq. Rosenzweig is also producing the hibernating Darksiders at New Line and Sanctuary at Lionsgate. We'll keep our ear to the ground for more information on "Ladder." Source Still...highly, highly doubtful... |

I would prefer they leave this movie alone. Seriously. The remakes have to stop. While I will go and see them and be blissfully lulled into new interpretation of something that has already branded itself onto my memory, it has to end. Jacobs Ladder is one of my favorite psychological thrillers. |

General short rant:
Bunch of whiners. Who cares what movies the movie studios remake. Sometimes they are good, most often they suck. Remaking a film doesnt alter the quality or status of the original, or as some of you like to say "It ruins the original". Give me a fucking break. Explain how watching a remake tarnishes the original movie. No answer....thats right, because it cant. Studios are out to make money, plain and simple, and the remake route is the hot seller nowadays.

I don't think that a remake tarnishes the original per se. In fact I think that a remake can in fact solidify the original by paying homage to it. Even if it sucks ass. And I still go and see the remakes. However, it just seems as if the market is flooded with this influx of potential remakes and I am eager to see something refreshing and (albeit hard to accomplish) not the contrived plots and under-nourished remakes that tend to permeate the bulk of hollywood cinema.

I would have to agree with you on that one SlayerX. The only type of remakes that piss me off are foreign films remade into American films (Grudge, The Invisible, The Vanishing, and now The Tale Of Two Sisters). It only bothers me because sometimes I hear people who know very little about horror movies think that these directors create unique and original movies when the movie actually came from the creativity of another person.

I'm usually embrace remakes with an open mind. There are some that pay homage to the original whilst imroving/expanding on the original's premise and becoming it's own movie- and a good one at that (Cape Fear, The Thing, The Fly, Dracula: Love Never Dies and The Hills Have Eyes come to mind)
But what really infuriates me is the cheap imatators like Psycho, The Grudge, Pulse, and The Omen. Also the simple fact is that some movies aren't very good remake material- because there's no way on earth you can do any better the second time around. Movies like Jacob's Ladder Straw Dogs and now that Rob Zombie's directing Halloween are all share something in common- remaking them is just plain unnecessary.

Right on.... i totally agree. not all remakes suck. I for one am sorely awaiting halloween. I beleive Rob Zombie will do it much justice. At least we have a huge fan of great horror re-writing one of the best horror movies ever instead of some industry head crappin out a script and half-assing the direction. |

Ugh, I hope not. I mean I'll always have the original to appreciate but it just is lousy that someone feels the need to remake Jacob's Ladder when it was fine the first time around. It's just telling of the sad state of creativity in Hollywood now a days.
