I thought it was a pretty good analogy. alcoholics need alcohol to cope with life. Seems to me some of the religious people I know need religion in the same way. They just can't accept the fact there may be nothing after this and no point to life besides living so they let them selves be engulfed into these fantastic ideas. Now Im not saying all of them, there's always exceptions. Im not an atheist either, so Im not saying there is no higher power but the history of the human race has been riddled with stupidity and religion isnt the shiniest turd out there.

But as far as my analogy goes, even you said its been used as a way to cope. Which was the point of my first statement. Also people using it as a moral basis, when its pretty easy to find out what is wrong and what is right in society, are just using it as a crutch as well. An unneeded one. It's not that hard to think "hey, maybe I shouldnt be such an asshole" but its pretty sad when people need to be threatened in to doing so.

My point is that whereas both things can be used as a coping mechanism, there's clearly a lot more to religion than that. It's not just compensating for the fear of death, obviously. All alcohol is is a coping mechanism. That's it. In fact, I feel kind of dumb noting the differences between alcohol and religion. Common sense and all that. Besides, I've never seen someone wasted on Jesus hit someone on the highway and drive off. Religion has done just as many good things for the world as it has bad, but that can be said about just about anything. People just tend to focus on the negative things because good news doesn't make for ratings and that's all they see.

Of course there are some people that feel they need to be "theatened" into being a good person, but religion as a whole is not a crutch. Faith in something is just a way of living, it has nothing to do with being weakminded. That's like Amish people calling someone who uses electricity to be weakminded. I do find it somewhat ironic that someone that drinks just as much as I do is calling something an unnecessary crutch though. In fact, most of what people in general take as being morally "right" or "wrong" is derived from religious beliefs.

But getting back to the original point of this topic, it's really not difficult to understand why people need a "higher power" in their life. It's not just about running away from what they don't like or can't comprehend.

The problem isn't the idea of 'hey, don't be a fuckface.' The problem is it's also a tool for ignorant people to justify intolerance, as well as being mental block, as it's basically the answer to all their questions. It's also framed as a lifestyle of 'values.' Which is retarded, as attending a building once a week isn't a value, it's a ritualistic practice.

Aside from once again, why do people need a higher power to not be a fuckface? If you need afterlife consequences to not be a fuckface in this life, chances are you already are.

I'm not saying there isn't a god, I'm just admitting that I don't know if there is or isn't. Anyone who lives and breaths, and claims that they know for a certainty what happens when you die is either delusional or a con artist. I have nothing against people believing in and practicing their faith, but don't force your 'values' on the other half of the population. It's also bullshit that churches don't have to pay taxes. If they don't have to pay taxes then they shouldn't be able use the tax funded services.

And I know, .
For the same reasons we have laws in place to punish people that kill, rape, and steal. It's a deterrent. And yes, obviously, religion has been used as an excuse for intolerance, but as I said a second ago, it's been used for just as much good as it has evil. To only focus on the negative aspects is ignorant. Going to church isn't considered a "value". That doesn't even make sense. I don't think anyone is trying to say going to church/temple/whatever is more than a practice, hence "practicing" a religion. They don't get their values by physically being inside a religious place, they get it from their particular holy books.

I know plenty of people who are atheists that are scumbags and plenty who aren't. This can be said about anyone, religious or not. If it keeps someone from being a shithead, what do you care how they arrive at that conclusion?

And yes, I completely agree, it's stupid to say you know one or the other about the existence or not of a higher power.

Another thing I don't get is why people still support Rush Limbaugh. That fat fuck should do us all a favor and just get the hell out of here and take his 'conservative' bullshit with him. He's a horrible excuse for a person.

Word to the goddamn mufukka.

I'll never understand why I have to fill up my gas tank 3 times a week. That is the only thing that really bugs me.

Agreed. I don't get why a guy who looks like he's constantly sweating butter gets to be so popular.
