Smartest? Hannibal Lecter. I thought Anthony Hopkins was ace but check out Brian Cox's portrayal in Michael Mann's Manhunter. I'd like to have seen him continue the role for Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal. He just seem to have the qualities that appealed at the time, despite the heavy Miami Vice vibe in the film.
John Doe from Se7en. I thought the story was great and Kevin Spacey was A1. Not horror but one of my favourite villains is Anton Chigurh, played by Javier Bardem, in No Country For Old Men. I just thought he was badass. Inventive, relentless, and fucking plain evil. He could have dropped into any horror film and torn it up.
