How much does a DVX100 run? I'm looking to get me a camera so that I can shoot decent enough quality and shoot several scripts back to back (I have a couple of shorts and a feature (a remake of Halloween just to see how well I can do the genre and to bust my chops on a feature length) that I wanna get done for a portfolio before I head out west for film school) I've been looking into a Canon XL or GL as they are both well worth the price but having said that, they are still expensive as shit
You can pick up DVX's for cheap used ($1000 or so) - just be careful of the run time. The cameras keep track of how much tape has gone through them. They're awesome cameras, which means they get A LOT of use by their owners. Mostly, they're getting phased out as people upgrade to the HVX (the HD version) - but they still give a good look.

Great thread!

I'm writing a script for a short horror film called "Beware of the Butcher of Weare!". I'm going to shoot it on my property (in my creepy old barn) and cast people I know. I won't have to worry too much about acting since it will be mostly a silent film (no dialogue, but with sound effects) and it will focus more on actions and body language. The score will be composed on my guitar.

It'll be my first attempt as a filmmaker.

You should go for it. It's the most fun you'll ever have.
We shot Patrol Men for a month and it was great.

I'm just writing my next film, which again, will probably be shot for nothing.
